PDF Booklet Maker

Reorder a PDF for saddle-stitch printing: pages land 2-up on landscape sheets, ready to print double-sided and fold.

Drop a PDF here or click to choose One PDF in reading order — page 1 becomes the front cover
mm
Moves inner pages towards the fold. 0.1 mm ≈ one sheet of 80 g/m² paper.
mm
Shrinks pages a little so nothing falls in the printer’s unprintable edge.
How to print and fold
  1. Open the booklet PDF and print it double-sided with “Flip on short edge” (sometimes called “short-edge binding” or “tumble”).
  2. Choose Actual size / 100% — not “Fit to page” — and landscape if your printer asks.
  3. No duplex printer? Print the odd pages (sheet fronts), put the stack back in the tray, then print the even pages. Try one sheet first to learn which way your printer needs the paper.
  4. Keep the sheets in order with sheet 1 on the outside, fold the stack in half and staple twice along the fold.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

Turn any PDF into a printable booklet

The PDF Booklet Maker rearranges a PDF so that it prints as a folded, stapled booklet — the “saddle-stitch” layout used for programmes, zines, manuals, church bulletins, menus and small catalogues. Two pages sit side by side on each landscape sheet, in exactly the order needed so that, once the sheets are printed double-sided, stacked and folded, every page reads in sequence.

Doing this by hand is fiddly: an 8-page booklet needs pages 8 and 1 on the front of the first sheet, 2 and 7 on its back, and so on. The tool works it out for any length, adds blank pages when the count isn’t a multiple of four, and shows you the plan sheet by sheet before you print.

Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser. Pages are placed as vector graphics, so text stays sharp and nothing is uploaded.

How to make a booklet from a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF onto the upload area. Page 1 becomes the front cover.
  2. Choose the sheet size: A4 sheets make an A5 booklet, Letter sheets a half-letter booklet, A3 sheets an A4 booklet.
  3. Decide where any blank pages go, choose the binding edge, and set creep compensation or a margin if you need them.
  4. Check the sheet order preview, then press Create booklet PDF and download it.
  5. Print double-sided with “Flip on short edge” at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple along the fold.

PDF Booklet Maker features

Correct saddle-stitch order

Pages are paired outside-in (last + first, second + second-last…) so the folded booklet reads in order.

Automatic padding

Page counts are padded to a multiple of four, with blanks at the end or just before the back cover.

Common booklet sizes

A4 → A5, Letter → half-letter, A3 → A4, Tabloid → Letter, Legal → 7 × 8.5 in, or two original pages side by side at full size.

Creep compensation

Shift inner pages towards the fold by a set amount per sheet, so outer margins stay even after trimming thick booklets.

Right-edge binding

Mirror the layout for Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, Japanese and other right-to-left booklets.

Sheet-by-sheet plan

See which pages land on the front and back of every sheet before you print a thing.

How booklet page order works

A booklet sheet holds four pages: two on the front and two on the back. For a booklet of P pages (a multiple of 4), sheet k carries pages P − 2k + 2 and 2k − 1 on the front, and 2k and P − 2k + 1 on the back. For a 12-page booklet:

SheetFront (left | right)Back (left | right)
1 (outside)12 | 12 | 11
210 | 34 | 9
3 (centre)8 | 56 | 7

Printing tips

  • Flip on short edge is essential: the sheets are landscape, so flipping on the long edge turns every back side upside down.
  • Print at actual size. A4 pages shrink to exactly A5 (70.7%) on an A4 sheet; “Fit to page” would shrink them again.
  • Do a test sheet first to check the duplex settings before printing the whole stack.
  • Margins: most printers can’t print the outer 3–5 mm. If your pages have content right to the edge, add a 3–4 mm margin here.
  • How many pages? Around 10–15 sheets (40–60 pages) fold and staple well with an ordinary long-reach stapler. Longer documents are easier as several booklets — split them first with Split PDF.

What is creep, and do you need it?

When a stack of sheets is folded, the inner sheets stick out a little further at the open edge than the outer ones, because each sheet wraps around those inside it. Once the booklet is trimmed flat, the outer margins of the centre pages end up narrower. Creep compensation nudges the pages on each inner sheet towards the fold to cancel this out: sheet 1 stays put, sheet 2 moves by one step, sheet 3 by two steps, and so on.

For a few sheets of office paper you can leave it at 0. For thicker booklets, start with your paper’s thickness — about 0.1 mm for 80 g/m² copy paper. Pages are clipped at the fold, so nothing spills onto the facing page.

Need page numbers on the booklet pages? Add them to the original first with Add Page Numbers, fix the page order with Organize PDF, or put more pages on a sheet without folding using PDF N-up.

PDF Booklet Maker FAQ

How do I print a PDF as a booklet?

Make the booklet PDF here, then print it double-sided with “Flip on short edge” at 100% scale. Stack the sheets with sheet 1 outside, fold them in half and staple along the fold.

Why does my booklet need a multiple of 4 pages?

Each folded sheet makes four pages — two on each side. If your document isn’t a multiple of four, blank pages are added at the end or before the back cover.

Can I make an A5 booklet from A4 pages?

Yes. Choose “A4 sheet → A5 booklet”. Each A4 page is scaled to 70.7%, two to a landscape A4 sheet, which folds to A5.

My printer has no duplex — can I still print a booklet?

Yes. Print the odd pages, which are the sheet fronts, reload the printed stack, then print the even pages. Test with one sheet to see which way round your printer needs the paper.

Why are the back pages upside down?

The printer flipped on the long edge. Choose “Flip on short edge” (short-edge binding) in the print dialog and print again.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The booklet is assembled in your browser and your PDF never leaves your device.
