How the Omer is counted

The Torah (Leviticus 23:15–16) commands counting seven complete weeks from the day after the first day of Pesach, when the Omer offering of barley was brought, until Shavuot on the fiftieth day. The count is said at night, after nightfall, starting on the second night of Pesach — the evening that begins 16 Nisan — and ending on the evening before Shavuot, which falls on 6 Sivan. Each night has its own count: “Today is nine days, which are one week and two days, of the Omer.”

Because the Jewish day begins at nightfall, the count for a given date is said the evening before. The page lets you choose: Evening gives the count you say that night, Daytime the count that is current during the day. If you forgot to count at night, the usual practice is to count during the following day without the blessing and continue with the blessing that evening; if a whole day was missed, many continue without the blessing. Ask your rabbi about your own case.

Nightfall (tzeit hakochavim) is when three stars appear. Communities use different definitions — the Sun 8.5° or 7.083° below the horizon, or a fixed 42, 50 or 72 minutes after sunset — and the page offers the same choices as Shabbat times. For other dates of the Jewish year use the Hebrew date converter.

The words of the count and the sefirot

The Hebrew follows the familiar formula: היום תשעה ימים, שהם שבוע אחד ושני ימים, לעומר. From the eleventh day the word for days becomes “yom” (singular), and from the seventh day the weeks are added. Ashkenazi siddurim usually end with “la’omer”, while many others say “ba’omer”; the order of the words also varies, so follow your own siddur. The transliteration and English on this page are our own.

In Kabbalistic tradition each of the seven weeks and each day within a week stands for one of seven sefirot — Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut — so day 1 is Chesed she-b’Chesed and day 33, Lag BaOmer, is Hod she-b’Hod. Many use the sefirah of the day for reflection.
