An actuarial life expectancy calculator based on your current age
This life expectancy calculator shows how many more years, on average, a person of your current age and sex lives, using official period life tables: the US Social Security Administration (SSA) table, the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) national life tables and India’s Sample Registration System (SRS) abridged life tables.
It is built for money decisions — retirement income, pensions, annuities, Social Security timing and required minimum distributions — not for health predictions. Alongside the average it shows your odds of reaching 80, 90 or 100 and the age that only one in four or one in ten people your age live past, which is what planners use to make savings last. Everything runs in your browser.
How to use the Life Expectancy Calculator
- Choose a life table: United States, United Kingdom or India.
- Choose male or female — the tables are published separately for each.
- Enter your current age (your age at your last birthday).
- Read the average years left, the survival curve and the odds of reaching each milestone age.
- In the US, optionally enter an IRA or 401(k) balance to see the IRS factor and required minimum distribution.
Life Expectancy Calculator features
Official tables
SSA 2023 (2026 Trustees Report), ONS 2022–2024 and SRS 2020–24 — the latest editions at the time of writing.
Survival odds
Chances of reaching 65 to 100, calculated from each table’s yearly death probabilities.
Planning horizon
The ages that 1 in 2, 1 in 4 and 1 in 10 people your age live past.
Survival curve
An animated chart of the share still alive at each age, with the median marked.
IRS RMD factors
Single Life and Uniform Lifetime factors from Publication 590-B, with an RMD estimate.
How the calculation works
A period life table takes the death rates observed in one period — for example 2023 in the US — and asks how long people would live if those rates never changed. qx is the chance that someone of exact age x dies within a year; lx is how many of 100,000 newborns survive to age x; ex is the average remaining years. Your chance of reaching age t is lt ÷ lx, the product of (1 − q) for every year in between.
Example: in the SSA 2023 table a 65-year-old man has 18.12 years left on average and a 65-year-old woman 20.66. That is an average age at death near 83 and 86 — but about 1 in 4 of those men will pass 90.
Life expectancy at 65 in the latest tables
Period figures understate how long today’s young people are likely to live if mortality keeps improving; cohort life expectancy, which builds in projected improvements, is usually higher.
| Table | Male at 65 | Female at 65 |
|---|---|---|
| US — SSA period life table 2023 | 18.12 years | 20.66 years |
| UK — ONS national life tables 2022–2024 | 18.73 years | 21.16 years |
| India — SRS abridged life tables 2020–24 | 14.5 years | 16.3 years |
What this calculator does not do
- It does not use your health, smoking, weight, income or family history, so it cannot predict your own lifespan. Ask a doctor about health risks.
- India’s table is published in five-year groups to an open 85+ group; ages in between are interpolated.
- IRS factors are legal divisors, not forecasts. Owners whose spouse is more than 10 years younger and the sole beneficiary use the Joint Life table, which is not included.
- For income planning, pair it with the retirement calculator or the Social Security break-even calculator.
Life Expectancy Calculator FAQ
How does a life expectancy calculator based on current age work?
It looks up average remaining years for your exact age and sex in an official life table. Because you have already survived to your age, your expected age at death is higher than life expectancy at birth.
Which life expectancy table does this use in the US?
The SSA Office of the Chief Actuary’s period life table for 2023, as used in the 2026 Social Security Trustees Report.
Can I use this life expectancy calculator for RMD?
Yes. Choose the US table and enter your age and balance; the IRS Uniform Lifetime divisor from Publication 590-B gives the required minimum distribution. Beneficiaries use the Single Life factor shown.
Is this a prediction of how long I will live?
No. It is a population average for your age and sex.
Why is the India figure lower at 65?
The SRS 2020–24 table reflects higher mortality at older ages in India than in the US or UK.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The tables are inside the page and the calculation runs in your browser.
