An exact age calculator for years, months and days
This age calculator tells you exactly how old someone is in years, months and days, with running totals in months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. You also get a countdown to the next birthday, the day of the week you were born, your Western star sign and your Chinese zodiac animal.
Schools, exams, job applications and pension or visa forms often need your age on a particular date: change the “Age on” date to answer them.
How to use the Age Calculator
- Enter the Date of birth.
- Optionally add a Birth time. When “Age on” is today, the result becomes a live count that includes hours and minutes.
- Leave Age on date as today, or pick another date — for example a school admission cut-off or an exam date. Press Today to jump back.
- Read your exact age, the totals and the cards for next birthday, birth weekday and zodiac signs.
- If you were born on the 29th, 30th or 31st, choose how short months are counted. Press Copy result to paste a summary anywhere.

How age is calculated
Age is stated in completed units. The calculator finds the largest number of whole months from your birth date that fit before the “Age on” date — each month ending on your birthday’s day number — then counts the days left over. Twelve months make a year.
Example: born on 15 July 1990, age on 7 October 2026. From 15 July 1990 to 15 July 2026 is 36 years. Two more whole months reach 15 September 2026, and from there to 7 October is 22 days. The answer is 36 years, 2 months and 22 days. Totals in days are exact differences between the two dates, so they include every leap day in between.
Months have 28 to 31 days, so “months and days” cannot be turned into a fixed number of days. For the gap between any two dates in several units, use the Date Difference Calculator.
Birthdays on 29 February, 30th and 31st
If you were born on 29 February, your birthday only appears on the calendar in leap years — every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400 (2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not; the Leap Year Checker explains the rule). In other years most people celebrate on 28 February, which keeps the birthday in February. Others use 1 March. Laws differ between countries on which date counts for a legal age.
The same choice affects month counting for anyone born on the 29th, 30th or 31st. With the default “last day of the month” rule, someone born on 31 January completes one month on 28 February (or 29 February in a leap year). With the “first of the next month” rule, the month completes on 1 March instead.
Western and Chinese zodiac
The Western (tropical) sun sign depends on where the Sun was on the day you were born. The standard date ranges are below; the changeover can move by a day between years, so a cusp birthday may belong to the neighbouring sign.
The Chinese zodiac gives each lunisolar year one of twelve animals and one of five elements. The year begins at Chinese New Year, between 21 January and 20 February, so someone born on 4 February 2000 is a Rabbit while someone born a day later is a Dragon. The calculator reads your browser’s built-in Chinese calendar to find the real New Year date.

Age Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my exact age?
Enter your date of birth and leave “Age on” set to today. The age calculator counts the completed years, then the completed months, then the remaining days. Add your birth time to see hours and minutes as well.
How do I calculate age on a specific date, like a school cut-off?
Change the “Age on date” field to the cut-off date. The result shows the age in years, months and days on that day, which is how most admission and exam age rules are checked. For exam limits with category relaxation, use the govt exam age limit calculator; for a baby’s age in weeks, the baby age calculator.
Why does my age in days not equal years × 365?
Leap years add an extra day roughly every four years, so the exact count of days is usually a few days more than years × 365. The totals are computed from the real calendar dates.
When does someone born on 29 February have a birthday?
In leap years, on 29 February. In other years it is usually celebrated on 28 February, though some people and some laws use 1 March. You can switch between both conventions in the calculator.
Which day of the week was I born on?
The “Day you were born” card shows it. For any other date, use the Day of the Week Calculator.
Does it work for very old dates?
Yes. It uses the Gregorian calendar extended backwards (the proleptic Gregorian calendar), the standard for software. Records from before a country adopted it — 1752 in Britain and its colonies — may give an older Julian date.
Is my date of birth saved or uploaded?
No. The calculation happens on your device and nothing is sent to a server or kept after you close the page.
