Landed cost calculator and import duty calculator
This landed cost calculator adds up everything it takes to get imported goods onto your shelf — the goods, international freight and insurance, customs duty, import VAT, GST or IGST, customs fees, clearing, port charges and inland transport — and divides it by the units in the shipment. It doubles as an import duty calculator with the customs value rules and formula order for India, the UK and the US built in, plus a general mode for other countries.
You enter the duty rate for your goods from the official tariff (it depends on the HS code, the country of origin and any trade agreement). The calculator then applies that country’s order of calculation: what the duty is charged on, what the import tax is charged on, and which fees apply.
How to use the Landed Cost & Import Duty Calculator
- Choose the country you are importing into: India, UK, US or Other.
- Enter the invoice currency and exchange rate, the units in the shipment and the FOB goods value, freight and insurance from the invoice.
- Enter the duty rate for your HS code — plus, for India, the SWS, any AIDC and the IGST rate; for the UK, the VAT rate; for the US, any additional duties.
- Tick whether you can reclaim the import VAT, GST or IGST as a registered business.
- Add clearing, port and inland transport costs, then read the landed cost per unit and the step-by-step breakdown. Copy it or download a CSV.

Formula order by country (as of 19 October 2026)
Worked example (India, default): $2,000 FOB + $300 freight + $20 insurance at ₹88 gives an assessable value of ₹2,04,160. BCD at 10% is ₹20,416, SWS is ₹2,041.60, and IGST at 18% of ₹2,26,617.60 is ₹40,791.17. With ₹16,000 of local costs and IGST reclaimed, the landed cost is ₹2,42,617.60 — ₹2,426.18 for each of 100 units.
| Country | Customs value | Duties | Import tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | Assessable value = FOB + freight + insurance to the Indian port (CIF). If unknown: freight 20% and insurance 1.125% of FOB; air freight capped at 20% of FOB | BCD = rate × AV; SWS = 10% of BCD; AIDC where notified | IGST = rate × (AV + BCD + SWS + AIDC) — Customs Tariff Act, 1975, s.3(7)–(8) |
| UK | Goods + transport and insurance to the UK border | Duty = rate × customs value; none on non-excise goods worth £135 or less | VAT 20% × (customs value + duty + costs to the first UK destination) |
| US | Transaction value (FOB) — international freight and insurance excluded when shown separately | Duty = HTS rate × value, plus any Section 301/232 duties | No federal VAT. MPF 0.3464% (min $34.58, max $670.86; informal $2.77); HMF 0.125% on ocean cargo |
Sources and dates
- India: Notification 91/2017-Customs (N.T.), 26 September 2017 (rule 10(2), which also ended the old 1% landing charge); SWS under s.110 of the Finance Act, 2018 (CBIC Circular 03/2022). Rates by tariff item are on CBIC’s and ICEGATE’s tariff pages.
- UK: GOV.UK guidance on customs value delivery costs, VAT on imports, and tax and duty on goods sent from abroad (£135 threshold).
- US: CBP Dec. 26-14, user fees for fiscal year 2027 (MPF $34.58–$670.86, informal $2.77), 19 CFR 24.24 (HMF 0.125%), and CBP’s June 2026 rules suspending the de minimis exemption.
Tips for a realistic landed cost
- Use the customs exchange rate for the date, not your bank’s rate; India’s CBIC and US CBP both publish them.
- Check for anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty or a preferential rate under a trade agreement — they can change the answer more than anything else.
- Spread freight by weight or volume when one shipment holds different products; the volumetric weight calculator helps.
Landed Cost & Import Duty Calculator FAQ
How is customs duty calculated in India?
Find the assessable value (CIF: goods + freight + insurance in rupees), apply basic customs duty, add the Social Welfare Surcharge at 10% of BCD, then charge IGST on assessable value + BCD + SWS. This landed cost calculator shows each step.
How do I calculate import tax in the UK?
Customs duty is the tariff rate on the customs value (goods plus transport and insurance to the UK border). Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty plus transport to the first UK destination. Non-excise goods worth £135 or less pay no duty.
What is a landed cost?
The total cost of a product once it reaches your warehouse: purchase price, freight, insurance, duties, non-reclaimable taxes, customs fees and local delivery. Divide by the units to price each item.
Where do I find the duty rate for my product?
From the official tariff for your HS code: India’s customs tariff (CBIC/ICEGATE), the UK Trade Tariff, or the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Rates also depend on origin and trade agreements.
Is IGST on imports a cost?
For a GST-registered business it is usually claimable as input tax credit, so it affects cash flow rather than landed cost. Untick the reclaim box if you cannot claim it.
Are these figures exact?
They follow the published rules but are estimates. Customs may round, apply other duties or value goods differently. Not customs or tax advice.
