The six-digit HS code is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; countries add their own digits (India 8, US 10) and set the duty. A keyword match is a starting point, not a classification ruling — read the heading and chapter notes, and check the official tariff before declaring.

Codes and wording: US Harmonized Tariff Schedule 2026 HTS Revision 21 (USITC, 9 October 2026; public domain), HS 2022 six-digit level, checked against the UN Comtrade HS 2022 code list. Chapter and section names are this tool's short labels.

HS code finder and lookup for exporters, importers and online sellers

This HS code finder searches the complete Harmonized System list — all 1,228 headings and 5,612 six-digit codes of the HS 2022 edition — by everyday product words or by number. Type “cotton t-shirt”, “leather handbag” or “smartphone” and it ranks the subheadings whose wording matches; type “6109”, “6109.10” or a full 8- or 10-digit national code and it shows that code with its chapter, heading and the other codes beside it. The whole list is loaded into the page, so the HS code lookup is instant and nothing you type leaves your browser.

It is built for exporters, cross-border sellers and freight forwarders who need a quick starting point before opening the official tariff. Every result links to the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule and to India’s ITC-HS, GST HSN and customs portals, where the national digits and duty rates live.

How to use the HS Code Finder

  1. Type what the product is and what it is made of in Product description or HS code — for example “cotton t-shirt”, “stainless steel kitchenware” or “sports shoes”. Or tap one of the example searches.
  2. Read the results. Each row shows the six-digit code, the heading it belongs to (grey) and the subheading wording, with your words highlighted.
  3. Select a code to see its section, chapter, heading and group, the other codes in the same heading, and links to the official tariffs.
  4. To browse instead, pick a chapter (for example 61, knitted clothing) or type a 2- or 4-digit number.
  5. Copy the code with or without the dot, or download the results as a CSV file for your product sheet.

How HS codes are built

The Harmonized System, maintained by the World Customs Organization, sorts goods into 21 sections and 97 chapters (chapter 77 is reserved). The first two digits are the chapter, four digits the heading and six digits the subheading. Over 200 countries use the same six digits, then add their own: India’s ITC-HS and Customs Tariff use 8 digits, the United States 10 (8 tariff digits plus 2 statistical), and the EU and UK 8 to 10.

Chapter (2 digits)61Knitted or crocheted clothing
Heading (4 digits)6109T-shirts, singlets, tank tops and similar garments, knitted or crocheted
Subheading (6 digits)6109.10Of cotton — the same in every HS country

Getting the classification right

  • Classify by what the product is and its main material, not its marketing name. A phone case is not a phone; a cotton-polyester shirt follows the fibre that predominates by weight.
  • Knitted and woven clothing sit in different chapters (61 and 62). Check how the fabric is made before you choose.
  • Sets, parts and accessories have their own rules in the chapter and section notes; the General Rules for the Interpretation of the HS decide close cases.
  • The same goods can have a different code in an older edition. This list is HS 2022, in force since 1 January 2022; the WCO has accepted an HS 2028 edition that takes effect on 1 January 2028.
  • When the duty at stake is significant, ask the customs authority for an advance ruling or use a licensed customs broker.

Where the data comes from

Codes and descriptions come from the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States, 2026 Revision 21, published by the US International Trade Commission on 9 October 2026 — a US government work in the public domain. Its six-digit level follows HS 2022; only US 8- and 10-digit lines, rates and textile category numbers were removed. The wording uses US spelling and may differ slightly from the WCO’s own (copyrighted) text. Chapter and section names are this tool’s own short labels. No duty rates are included: they change often and differ by country of origin, so take them from the official tariff.

Once you have the code, estimate duty and import tax with the landed cost calculator, agree delivery terms with the trade terms chart, and put the code on your proforma invoice.

HS Code Finder FAQ

How do I find the HS code for my product?

Search for what the product is and what it is made of, open the closest result and read its heading and the other codes beside it. Confirm the national digits in the official tariff of the importing country, and ask for an advance ruling if you are unsure. This HS code finder is a lookup aid, not a binding classification.

What is the HS code for clothes?

Clothing is in chapter 61 if it is knitted or crocheted (most T-shirts, sweatshirts, socks) and chapter 62 if it is woven (most shirts, jeans, suits). Within each chapter the heading depends on the garment and the subheading on the fibre — a cotton knitted T-shirt is 6109.10.

Is the HSN code the same as the HS code?

Yes at six digits. India uses the term HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) for GST invoices and returns; the Customs Tariff and ITC-HS extend it to eight digits.

Where is the full HS code list?

This page contains the full HS 2022 six-digit list. Pick a chapter or type a 2-digit number to browse it, and download any chapter as CSV. For 8- and 10-digit lines, use the national tariff linked from each code.

Does the tool show import duty rates?

No. Rates depend on the importing country, the country of origin, trade agreements and frequent changes, so the tool links to the official US and Indian tariff search pages instead of embedding numbers that may be out of date.

Which HS edition does it use?

HS 2022, the edition in force from 1 January 2022. The next edition, HS 2028, takes effect on 1 January 2028; codes for some goods will change then.
