Convert kilobytes to megabytes (KB to MB)

To convert kilobytes to megabytes, divide the value in kilobytes by 1,000. It is useful for upload limits on job portals and government forms, email attachments, images and documents measured in kilobytes. This kb to mb converter works both ways: type kilobytes or megabytes into either box above and the other box, the worked formula and the chart below update as you type.

A kilobyte (KB or kB) is 1,000 bytes in the decimal (SI) system. Its binary counterpart, the kibibyte (KiB), is 1,024 bytes. Kilobytes describe small files — plain-text documents, icons, short emails — and the upload limits on many online forms. One kilobyte is 0.001 megabytes.

A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes (10⁶) in the SI units used by storage makers and networks. A mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. Going the other way, one megabyte equals 1,000 kilobytes. Megabytes measure photos (a phone photo is typically a few MB), songs, documents, apps and mobile data use.

How to convert kb to mb with this tool

  1. Type a number into the Kilobytes (KB) box — it starts at 500 KB as an example.
  2. Read the answer in the Megabytes (MB) box and in the result panel, which also shows the formula with your number.
  3. To go the other way, type into the megabytes box and the kilobytes value is worked out backwards. For other units, open the data storage converter.
  4. Choose how many decimal places you want, or tap a quick value such as 100 KB, 250 KB, 500 KB.
  5. Press Copy result to paste the conversion into a message, spreadsheet or note.

KB to MB converter features

Converts both ways

Type in the kilobytes box to get megabytes, or in the megabytes box to get kilobytes. The other box follows instantly.

Exact factor

Calculations use 1 MB = 1,000 KB, and rounding is applied only to the answer you see — choose Auto or 0–10 decimal places.

Formula with your number

The working is shown under the result, for example 500 KB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 MB, so you can check it or copy the method.

Binary units shown

For sizes reported by Windows or older software, the binary equivalent (KiB to MiB) appears under the result.

KB to MB formula

The formula is MB = KB ÷ 1,000. It is exact because SI prefixes step by exactly 1,000: 1 MB = 1,000 KB.

The reverse formula is KB = MB × 1,000. Three worked examples:

  • A 500 KB photo: 500 KB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 MB
  • A 2,048 KB file: 2,048 KB ÷ 1,000 = 2.048 MB
  • A 100 KB upload limit: 100 KB ÷ 1,000 = 0.1 MB

Decimal (GB) or binary (GiB)?

This converter uses decimal SI prefixes, as drive makers, network speeds and mobile carriers do: each step is × 1,000. Computers often count in powers of two instead — 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. The IEC introduced these “-bi” names in 1998 so the two systems could be told apart, but Windows still labels binary values “KB”, “MB” and “GB”.

So the same digits can mean two things: 2,048 KB = 2.048 MB in decimal units, while 2,048 KiB = 2 MiB in binary units. The binary figure is shown under the main answer.

KB to MB quick reference

The values people look up most often, worked out with the exact factor:

  • 1 KB = 0.001 MB
  • 1 MB = 1,000 KB
  • 100 KB = 0.1 MB
  • 250 KB = 0.25 MB
  • 500 KB = 0.5 MB
  • 1,000 KB = 1 MB

Quick tip: Divide by 1,000 — move the decimal point three places left: 750 KB = 0.75 MB. To get a photo under an upload limit, try the image compressor.

KB to MB FAQ

How many megabytes is 250 KB?

250 kilobytes is 0.25 megabytes: 250 KB ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 MB.

How do I convert kb to mb?

Divide the value in kilobytes by 1,000. For example, 5,000 KB ÷ 1,000 = 5 MB. To convert back, multiply the value in megabytes by 1,000.

How many kilobytes are in one megabyte?

One megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes, because 1 MB × 1,000 = 1,000 KB.

What is 5,000 kilobytes in megabytes?
5,000 KB = 5 MB. That result is exact — no rounding is involved.
Is 1 MB 1,000 KB or 1,024 KB?

In SI units 1 MB = 1,000 kB, which this converter uses. Many operating systems and older programs use binary units, where 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB — so a “2,048 KB” file in Windows is exactly 2 MiB, or 2.048 MB in decimal.
