Navkarsi time today, with Porsi, Purimaddh, Avaddh and Chauvihar

This free page shows navkarsi time today and the other Jain pachchakhan times for your city, worked out from the local sunrise and sunset. Pick a city (or press Use my location), and it lists Navkarsi, Porsi, Sadh-Porsi, Purimaddh, Avaddh and the Chauvihar or Tivihar time, with a table for the next seven days. It works for any place, whether you are in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Jersey, Fremont, Atlanta or London.

Pachchakhan means taking a vow of abstaining from food and drink until a stated time. Because the times depend on the day, they change a little every day, which is why a printed list for the whole year is usually replaced with a calendar like this one.

How to use the Jain Pachchakhan Times

  1. Choose your City or enter latitude, longitude and the time zone. The date starts on today; use the arrows, Today or Tomorrow.
  2. Read Navkarsi in the large box, and the other times in the table below it. The line under the box says which time comes next.
  3. Adjust Navkarsi after sunrise (48 minutes by default), Chauvihar before sunset or a sunrise adjustment to match your community’s practice.
  4. Use the seven-day table to plan ahead, then Copy today or Download week CSV.

How each time is worked out

The day, from sunrise to sunset, is divided into four praharas. Porsi is one prahar after sunrise, Sadh-Porsi is one and a half praharas, Purimaddh is two (midday) and Avaddh is three. Navkarsi is a fixed 48 minutes after sunrise, one muhurta, equal to two ghadi of 24 minutes. Chauvihar and Tivihar are vows taken in the evening and are meant to begin before sunset; Tivihar allows water, Chauvihar does not.

Example: on 24 October 2026 in New Delhi the sun rises at about 6:27 am and sets at about 5:43 pm, a daylight of 11 h 16 min. Navkarsi is at 7:15 am, Porsi about 9:16 am, Sadh-Porsi about 10:40 am, Purimaddh about 12:05 pm and Avaddh about 2:54 pm.

Differences between communities

Not every community uses the same sunrise and margins. Some use the sunrise printed in a local panchang, some add a few minutes of caution, and many end the last meal a little before sunset. That is why the margins are editable here rather than fixed. The standard 0.833° sunrise and sunset rule is used, which can differ by a minute or two from a printed panchang, and the Sun does not rise or set in polar summer or winter, where the page says so.

This is a calculation aid, not a ruling. Confirm the method with your local guru, sangh or community calendar. For a wider view of the day, see the Panchang today and Ekadashi dates.

Jain Pachchakhan Times FAQ

What is navkarsi time today?

It is 48 minutes after local sunrise for the city you chose. The large box shows it for the selected date.

What is the porsi time?

Porsi is one quarter of the daylight after sunrise, roughly three hours after sunrise in a 12-hour day.

What is the chauvihar time?

Chauvihar (and Tivihar) is taken before sunset. By default the page shows sunset itself; set the minutes before sunset to match your community, for example 48.

Does this work for the USA, such as New Jersey or Fremont?

Yes. Choose a nearby city or enter coordinates and the time zone; the daylight saving offset is handled automatically.

Why does my panchang show a different time?

Panchangs may use a different sunrise reference or margin. Use the sunrise adjustment and the buffers to match, or follow your community calendar.

Is this a religious ruling?

No. It calculates times from the Sun’s position and the traditional fractions of the day. Please confirm with your guru or community.
