Patterns are counted from each verb's first listed form. Learn the AAA group first (no change at all), then ABB, where V2 and V3 are the same (buy – bought – bought), which covers most of the remaining verbs.
| Pattern | Example | Verbs in the list |
|---|---|---|
| AAA | cut – cut – cut | 29 |
| ABB | bring – brought – brought | 91 |
| ABA | come – came – come | 4 |
| ABC | write – wrote – written | 76 |
| AAB | beat – beat – beaten | 1 |
V2 or V3: which one do I need?
- V2 (past simple) stands alone for a finished past action: She wrote a letter yesterday.
- V3 (past participle) follows have, has or had in perfect tenses (She has written) and a form of be in the passive (The letter was written).
- When V2 and V3 are the same (ABB and AAA verbs), the sentence decides: I bought it (V2) and I have bought it (V3).
- To see every tense of a verb in one chart, use the English tenses chart; to find passive sentences in your writing, the passive voice checker.
Source and accuracy
The list was written for this tool and every verb was cross-checked against the forms in Wikipedia's list of English irregular verbs on 23 October 2026. Where British and American English differ, both are given, British first. Regional and old forms (such as holpen) are left out. Any verb not in the list is regular and takes -ed.
