An engagement rate calculator that shows every formula
This engagement rate calculator works out how strongly people respond to your posts. Enter likes, comments, shares and saves for one post, or a list of posts for an account average, and it gives the engagement rate by followers, by reach, by impressions and by views side by side — because different platforms, agencies and brand deals use different formulas.
Pick the platform to see a cited median for brand accounts next to your number, choose exactly which interactions count, and switch the headline formula to the one your client or media kit uses. It works for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn or any other network. Nothing is uploaded; the maths runs in your browser.
How to use the Engagement Rate Calculator
- Choose One post or Average over posts.
- Pick the platform and the denominator in Divide interactions by: followers, reach, impressions or views.
- Type your follower count and tick the interactions to count — likes, comments, shares, saves and, for one post, other interactions such as link clicks.
- Enter the post’s numbers, or fill one row per post (add up to 50); the reach column becomes impressions or views if you choose those.
- Read the headline rate, the other formulas in the table and the comparison with the reported median.

Engagement rate formulas
Worked example (the defaults): 1,200 likes + 85 comments + 40 shares + 150 saves = 1,475 interactions. By followers: 1,475 ÷ 25,000 = 5.9%. By reach: 1,475 ÷ 18,000 = 8.19%. By impressions: 1,475 ÷ 30,000 = 4.92%. Reach-based rates are usually higher because reach is smaller than your follower count for most posts.
| Formula | Calculation | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| By followers | interactions ÷ followers × 100 | comparing accounts; most public benchmarks |
| By reach | interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100 | how engaging the content was for the people who saw it |
| By impressions | interactions ÷ impressions × 100 | paid posts and ads, where impressions are billed |
| By views | interactions ÷ views × 100 | video and short-video platforms |
| Average per post | average interactions per post ÷ followers × 100 | an account-level rate over a period |
Benchmarks (typical, not targets)
These are all-industry medians for brand accounts with 25,000 to 1,000,000 Facebook fans, about 150 companies per industry, counting likes, comments, shares, reposts and reactions divided by followers. Influencers and smaller accounts tend to score higher, and no platform publishes an official “good” rate. Use the median as context and track your own trend over time.
| Platform | Median per post, by followers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2.01% | Rival IQ / Quid, 2026 report (5 March 2026) |
| 0.30% | same | |
| YouTube | 0.21% | same, first-year early analysis |
| X (Twitter) | 0.03% | same |
| 0.046% | 2025 report (25 February 2025, 2024 data) |
Tips for an honest rate
- Use the same formula and interactions every time; switching from followers to reach can double the number.
- Take numbers a few days after posting, when most interactions are in.
- Leave out giveaway posts or note them — they inflate comments.
- For video, a by-views rate pairs well with the video earnings calculator and the creator RPM calculator. To lift engagement, try better hooks with the caption generator.
Engagement Rate Calculator FAQ
What is the engagement rate calculator formula?
Engagement rate = interactions ÷ audience × 100. The audience is usually followers, but may be reach, impressions or views. Interactions are typically likes, comments, shares and saves.
How do I calculate Instagram engagement rate?
Add likes, comments, shares and saves on a post, divide by your followers (or by the post’s reach from your insights) and multiply by 100. Pick Instagram above to compare with the 0.30% brand median.
How is TikTok engagement rate calculated?
The same way, but many people divide by views because TikTok shows views on every video. Choose “Views” in the formula box.
How do I work out engagement rate for YouTube?
Use likes, comments and shares divided by views for a video, or by subscribers for a channel comparison.
What is a good engagement rate?
There is no official threshold. Reported 2026 medians for brands were about 0.30% on Instagram and 2.01% on TikTok by followers; beating your own past average matters more.
Should I average per-post rates or total interactions?
The calculator shows both. The mean of per-post rates treats every post equally; total ÷ total gives big posts more weight.
