A hashtag generator built for today’s smaller hashtag limits

Hashtags changed in late 2025. Instagram now takes at most five per post or reel, X suggests no more than two, and Threads allows a single topic. A wall of thirty tags no longer works, so this hashtag generator does the opposite of most: it gives you a short, balanced set that fits the platform you pick, made from the words in your own caption.

Type a topic or paste the caption. The generator pulls out the key phrases, guesses the niche (52 hand-written niches, from fitness and street food to cricket, weddings and competitive exams), then sorts the ideas into five kinds: tags from your text, location, brand or campaign, niche, and broad. A preset for each platform picks the mix; press any tag to add or remove it.

Everything happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the tags are suggestions built from your words and a word list — this tool does not claim to know which tags are trending.

How to generate hashtags for a post

  1. Write a few words about the post in Topic or caption, or paste the full caption.
  2. Check the detected Niche on the right; choose another one from the list if the guess is wrong. Add a Location and a Brand or campaign tag if you use them.
  3. Pick the Platform. The tool selects the right number of tags and shows that platform’s rule underneath.
  4. Press tags to add or remove them, and watch the counter — it turns red when Instagram’s or Threads’ hard limit is passed.
  5. Choose a layout (spaces, one per line, or below the caption with two blank lines), then Copy hashtags. Save set keeps the set in this browser for later.

Hashtag Generator features

Five kinds of tags

Specific phrases from your text, location tags (#Pune, #PuneFitness), your brand tag, niche tags and a few broad ones — the mix most social media guides recommend.

Per-platform presets

Instagram 5 (2 specific, 2 niche, 1 local), TikTok 5, X 2, LinkedIn 3, YouTube 3 for the title area, Threads 1 topic.

CamelCase by default

#HomeWorkout is easier to read than #homeworkout, and screen readers can say the separate words.

Spam-pattern check

Engagement bait such as #follow4follow is crossed out and never pre-selected; generic tags like #explorepage, digits-only tags and stretched spellings are flagged.

Seeded shuffle

Niche tags are picked with a seed: Shuffle shows another selection, and typing the same seed brings a list back exactly.

Export

Copy the set, download it as TXT, save it as a favourite, or download every idea as CSV.

XRecommends no more than 2 per post; posts are 280 characters without PremiumX Help Center, “How to use hashtags” (commonly quoted wording; the page refused automated access)
LinkedInNo published limit; 3–5 is the usual adviceCommonly quoted
YouTubeUp to 3 hashtags shown by the title; more than 60 and all are ignoredYouTube Help, “Use hashtags for YouTube videos”, checked 14 Oct 2026
ThreadsOne topic tag per post, added in the composer; topics may contain spacesThreads launch of topic tags, Dec 2023 (Social Media Today)

Worked example

The caption “Easy 15-minute home workout for beginners — no equipment needed, just a mat. Filmed in our Pune living room.”, with location Pune, brand FitWithAsha and seed m4-test, gives the keywords home workout, pune living room and equipment, and the niche Fitness & gym.

The Instagram preset selects #HomeWorkout #PuneLivingRoom #Pune #WorkoutTips #HiitWorkout — two tags from the text, one location tag and two niche tags. Switch to X and it shrinks to #HomeWorkout #WorkoutTips; on YouTube it becomes #HomeWorkout #FitWithAsha #WorkoutTips, and Threads gets the single topic “home workout”.

Getting more from five hashtags

  • Describe the post, not the platform: #HomeWorkout tells people what they will see; #reels does not.
  • Use one location tag when place matters (a café, a wedding venue, a trek). It is one of the few tags that brings local viewers.
  • Keep a branded tag for your series or shop, and use it every time so the tag page becomes your archive.
  • Put the words people search for in the caption too. Instagram and TikTok read captions, so the keywords still help when the hashtags are few.
  • Before posting, check the caption length and line breaks with the Instagram Caption Formatter, or write one with the Social Media Caption Generator. To pull tags out of an existing post, use the Hashtag Extractor; for couple-name tags use the Wedding Hashtag Generator.

Hashtag Generator FAQ

How many hashtags should I use on Instagram in 2026?

At most five. Instagram announced in December 2025 that posts and reels would be limited to five hashtags, counting the caption and comments together. Three to five specific tags is the sweet spot this hashtag generator aims for.

Does the generator know which hashtags are trending or banned?

No. It has no access to live platform data, so it never claims a tag is popular or “banned”. It builds tags from your words and a hand-written niche list, and flags patterns that look spammy, such as follow-for-follow tags, generic tags and digits-only tags.

Why CamelCase hashtags?

Capitalising each word (#SmallBusinessOwner) makes a tag readable at a glance, avoids accidental words, and lets screen readers announce the separate words. Platforms treat #HomeWorkout and #homeworkout as the same tag.

Where should hashtags go — caption or first comment?

On Instagram it no longer matters for the count: the limit covers the caption and comments together. Putting them at the end of the caption, after two blank lines, keeps the opening readable; the “Below caption” layout does that with invisible line characters Instagram keeps.

How does the Threads topic work?

Threads takes one topic per post. Copy the suggested topic, type # in the Threads composer and add it there — a pasted tag is not activated automatically, and topics can contain spaces.

Is my caption private?

Yes. The keywords, niche guess and tags are worked out by code on this page. Nothing is uploaded, and saved sets stay in your browser’s local storage until you clear them.
