A delivery challan format as per GST, ready to print in triplicate

This free delivery challan generator fills in a challan for goods that leave your premises without a tax invoice: material sent to a job worker, goods going for repair, testing or an exhibition, liquid gas whose quantity is not known at dispatch, or one lot of a large order that was invoiced in advance. It lays out every particular that Rule 55 of the CGST Rules, 2017 asks for and prints the three marked copies the rule requires.

You type your details once; the challan number counts up for the next one, and your logo and signature stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up. It is a template for your own business, not legal or tax advice: check your local legal requirements and your e-way bill obligations for each movement.

How to use the Delivery Challan Generator

  1. Enter the challan number (up to 16 characters) and date, then pick the reason for moving the goods.
  2. Fill in your business as the consigner, with GSTIN, logo and signature, and the consignee with their GSTIN or UIN.
  3. Add the transport details: mode, vehicle number, transporter, LR number and the e-way bill number if you generated one.
  4. Add each goods line with its HSN code, quantity, unit and value per unit.
  5. For a movement that is a supply, keep the GST lines and set the place of supply; for job work, choose “No tax”.
  6. Choose the copies and press Download PDF.

What CGST Rule 55 requires on a delivery challan

Rule 55(1) allows a consigner to issue a delivery challan, serially numbered in one or more series and not more than sixteen characters long, instead of an invoice when goods are removed for: (a) supply of liquid gas where the quantity is not known at removal, (b) job work, (c) reasons other than a supply, or (d) other supplies notified by the Board. The challan must show:

  1. date and number of the delivery challan;
  2. name, address and GSTIN of the consigner, if registered;
  3. name, address and GSTIN or UIN of the consignee, if registered;
  4. HSN code and description of the goods;
  5. quantity (provisional where the exact quantity is not known);
  6. taxable value;
  7. tax rate and tax amount — central, State, integrated, Union territory tax or cess — where the movement is for a supply to the consignee;
  8. place of supply, for an inter-State movement; and
  9. signature.

Copies, e-way bill and batches

Source: CGST Rules, 2017, Rule 55, as published in the CBIC tax information portal (taxinformation.cbic.gov.in), checked 19 October 2026; sub-rule (5) words “or in batches or lots” inserted by Notification 39/2018-Central Tax.

  • Triplicate: for a supply of goods the challan is prepared in three copies marked ORIGINAL FOR CONSIGNEE, DUPLICATE FOR TRANSPORTER and TRIPLICATE FOR CONSIGNER (Rule 55(2)). Many businesses print all three for job work too.
  • E-way bill: goods moving on a challan must be declared as rule 138 specifies (Rule 55(3)). Use the e-way bill validity calculator to see how long one stays valid for your distance.
  • Invoice after delivery: where goods move for a supply but the invoice could not be raised at removal, the supplier issues the tax invoice after delivery (Rule 55(4)).
  • Batches, SKD or CKD: the complete invoice is issued before the first lot; each later lot travels with its own challan quoting that invoice and a certified copy of it, and the original invoice goes with the last lot (Rule 55(5)).

Worked example

The sample sends 400 flanges at ₹185 and 120 shafts at ₹640 to a job worker in the same state. The value is ₹74,000 + ₹76,800 = ₹1,50,800, shown without tax because job work is not a supply. If the same goods were a batch of an invoiced order, GST at 18% would add CGST ₹13,572 and SGST ₹13,572 (total ₹1,77,944); sent to Karnataka, it would be IGST ₹27,144 instead. Inputs sent for job work normally have to come back within one year and capital goods within three years (section 143 of the CGST Act), so the challan prints an expected return date.

Delivery Challan Generator FAQ

What is a delivery challan in GST?

A document a registered person issues instead of a tax invoice when goods are moved for job work, for reasons that are not a supply, for liquid gas of unknown quantity, or in other cases listed in Rule 55 of the CGST Rules.

What is the delivery challan format as per GST?

There is no prescribed form layout, only the particulars in Rule 55: challan number and date, consigner and consignee details with GSTIN, HSN and description, quantity, taxable value, tax where it is a supply, place of supply for inter-State movement, and signature. This generator prints all of them.

Is a delivery challan in triplicate compulsory?

For a supply of goods Rule 55(2) says the challan is prepared in triplicate: original for the consignee, duplicate for the transporter, triplicate for the consigner. The PDF can contain all three.

Do I need an e-way bill with a delivery challan?

Rule 55(3) says goods moved on a challan must be declared as specified in rule 138, which governs e-way bills. Whether one is needed depends on value, distance and the type of movement, so check the current rules.

Can I make a delivery challan format in Excel instead?

You can, but this tool already calculates values, GST and amount in words and produces a print-ready PDF in triplicate. Export JSON keeps a backup of every challan.

Is this an official government form?

No. It is a template for your own business documents. You remain responsible for the details; check your local legal requirements or ask your tax adviser.
