Convert BMP to JPG and shrink bitmap files dramatically
BMP images are usually stored uncompressed, which makes them huge: a single Full HD screenshot weighs about 6 MB. This BMP to JPG converter turns Windows bitmaps into compact JPG files that email, chat apps, websites and upload forms accept without complaint. Convert a batch, set the quality, download the results — the work happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
BMP files still turn up from scanners, older Windows software, industrial and laboratory equipment, legacy games and some screenshot tools. Converting them to JPG is the quickest way to make them easy to share and store.
How to use the BMP to JPG Converter
- Drop your BMP or DIB files onto the upload area, click it to choose them, or paste with Ctrl+V.
- Set the Quality. 85–92 suits photos and scans; go lower for smaller files.
- If a 32-bit BMP has transparent areas, choose the Background for transparent areas.
- See the size reduction for each file and in the summary.
- Download the JPGs one at a time, or as a ZIP with Download all.
BMP to JPG Converter features
Huge size savings
Uncompressed bitmaps typically shrink to a small fraction of their size as JPG.
Common BMP variants
Reads 1-, 4-, 8-, 16-, 24- and 32-bit bitmaps, stored bottom-up or top-down, as decoded by your browser.
32-bit alpha handled
Bitmaps with an alpha channel are flattened onto the colour you choose instead of an unexpected black.
Quality control
Slide between maximum fidelity and minimum size; files re-convert as you move the slider.
Private batch conversion
Convert many bitmaps at once without uploading them, then download a ZIP.
Why BMP files are so large
The BMP format — also called a device-independent bitmap, or DIB — dates from the early days of Windows and OS/2. The classic 40-byte BITMAPINFOHEADER arrived with Windows 3.0 in 1990; later V4 and V5 headers added colour masks, alpha and colour profiles. In its most common 24-bit form a BMP simply lists the blue, green and red value of every pixel, row by row from the bottom up, with each row padded to a multiple of four bytes.
There is no compression, so the size is fixed by the dimensions: width × height × 3 bytes plus a 54-byte header. A 1920 × 1080 image is 6,220,854 bytes, and a 12-megapixel scan (4000 × 3000) is about 36 MB. JPG stores the same photo or scan in a tiny fraction of that.
BMP to JPG or BMP to PNG?
- Photos, scans of photos, textures: JPG gives the smallest files, with no visible difference at quality 85–92.
- Screenshots, diagrams, text, pixel art: choose BMP to PNG. PNG is lossless and still far smaller than BMP, and it keeps sharp edges free of JPG artefacts.
- Images with transparency (32-bit BMP): PNG keeps the alpha channel; JPG fills it with your background colour.
- Strict upload limits, such as job or exam application forms: convert to JPG, then fine-tune with the image compressor.
BMP and JPG compared
| BMP | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | None (optional RLE for 4- and 8-bit) | Lossy DCT |
| 1920 × 1080 file size | 6.2 MB at 24-bit, always | Usually well under 1 MB |
| Colour depth | 1 to 32 bits per pixel | 8 bits per channel |
| Transparency | In 32-bit V4/V5 files | No |
| Metadata | Minimal (colour profile in V5) | EXIF, XMP, ICC |
| Support | Windows, browsers, most editors | Everywhere |
BMP to JPG Converter FAQ
How do I convert BMP to JPG?
Drop the BMP files on the converter, set the quality (90 is a safe default) and download the JPGs one by one or together as a ZIP.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
Usually dramatically smaller, because BMP is uncompressed. The exact saving depends on the image; the converter shows each file’s size before and after.
Does converting BMP to JPG lose quality?
Slightly, since JPG is lossy, but at quality 85–92 it is very hard to see in photos and scans. For screenshots and text, convert to PNG to stay lossless.
Can it open 32-bit BMPs with transparency?
Yes, when your browser decodes the alpha channel, as current Chrome and Edge do for V4 and V5 bitmaps. Transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose.
What is a DIB file?
DIB stands for device-independent bitmap — the same format as BMP with a different extension. The converter accepts .dib files too.
Is my BMP uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser decodes the bitmap and encodes the JPG locally, so the files stay on your device.
