JPG to PNG Converter

Turn JPG and JPEG photos into lossless PNG files — batch convert, keep or strip EXIF, download as ZIP.

Drop JPG images here or click to choose JPG, JPEG or JFIF · many at once · paste with Ctrl+V
Camera data (EXIF)
Remove deletes GPS location, camera model and capture date. Keep copies them into the new file.

PNG is lossless: the new file keeps every pixel of the decoded JPG, but it can’t undo JPG compression, and photos usually come out several times larger.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

Convert JPG to PNG without adding more compression

This JPG to PNG converter turns JPG and JPEG photos into PNG files right in your browser. Drop in one picture or a whole folder, and each image is decoded, redrawn and saved as a lossless PNG that you can download on its own or together with the rest in a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs on your own device, so it is as safe for a scanned ID card as for holiday snaps.

People usually need PNG for a practical reason. A design app, website builder or game engine accepts only PNG; you want to keep editing a picture without losing a little more detail every time you save it; or you plan to cut out the background later and need a format that can hold transparency. PNG handles all three. What it cannot do is bring back detail that JPG compression has already thrown away — the PNG is a perfect copy of the JPG as it looks now, artefacts included.

How to use the JPG to PNG Converter

    1. Drop your JPG or JPEG files onto the upload area, click it to browse, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V. You can add as many as you like.
    2. Choose what happens to camera data under Camera data (EXIF): Remove (the default) leaves out GPS location and camera details, Keep copies them into the PNG.
    3. Each file is converted straight away. The list shows the original and new size; click a thumbnail to compare the Converted and Original views in the preview.
    4. Press the download button next to a file, or Download all to get every PNG in one ZIP archive.

    JPG to PNG Converter features

    Lossless output

The PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from your JPG. Nothing is compressed lossily again, so no new artefacts appear, however many times you save the PNG afterwards.

    Photos stay upright

Phone pictures often store a sideways image plus an EXIF “rotate me” flag. The converter applies that rotation first, so the PNG looks the way the photo looked in your gallery.

    Optional EXIF copy

Keep the camera model, capture date and other EXIF fields in the PNG’s eXIf chunk, or remove them — handy before posting pictures that carry a GPS location.

    Batch and ZIP

Convert a whole set in one go and download every PNG in a single ZIP file with the original names.

    Size before and after

Every file shows its old and new size and the percentage change, and the summary totals the whole batch.

Why a PNG is usually bigger than the JPG it came from

JPG gets its small files by being lossy: it splits the picture into 8×8-pixel blocks, describes each block with a discrete cosine transform and then rounds away the fine detail your eye is least likely to miss. PNG is lossless: it predicts each row of pixels from its neighbours and squeezes the result with DEFLATE, the same algorithm ZIP files use, but it never discards anything.

A photograph full of grain, foliage or skin texture gives a lossless compressor very little to work with, so the PNG often ends up several times larger than the JPG. Screenshots, charts, scanned line art and pictures with large flat areas behave much better and can even shrink. If a smaller file is your real goal, keep the JPG and use the image compressor, or try JPG to WebP instead.

When converting JPG to PNG makes sense

    • Editing in several rounds. Each time a JPG is opened, changed and saved again it is compressed again, and the losses add up (generation loss). Convert once to PNG, do all your edits, and export a final JPG only at the end.
    • Apps and platforms that require PNG. Some sticker makers, icon builders, slide tools and game engines only take PNG files.
    • Preparing for transparency. JPG has no alpha channel. Convert to PNG first, then erase the background in your editor; the PNG can store the see-through pixels.
    • Text and diagrams saved as JPG by mistake. Converting stops further damage to the sharp edges, although it cannot remove the halo of artefacts that is already there.
    • Archiving. PNG is an open international standard (ISO/IEC 15948) that every browser and image editor reads.

    JPG to PNG Converter FAQ

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Drop the JPG files on the converter above, choose whether to keep the EXIF data, and the PNGs are ready a moment later. Download them one by one or all together as a ZIP. It works the same way for files ending in .jpeg, .jpe or .jfif.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG preserves the picture exactly as it is, so any blockiness or blur from the original JPG compression stays. What PNG does prevent is further loss when you edit and save again.

Why is my PNG file so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, and photos contain a lot of fine, random detail that lossless compression can’t shrink much. It is common for a camera photo to come out several times larger as a PNG, while screenshots and graphics grow far less or even get smaller.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not automatically. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG starts out fully opaque. After converting you can remove the background in an image editor, and the PNG will keep the transparent areas.

What happens to the photo’s EXIF data and orientation?

With Remove selected the PNG carries no camera data. With Keep, the EXIF block (camera, date, GPS and so on) is copied into the PNG’s eXIf chunk. Either way the picture is turned upright first and the orientation tag is reset, so viewers don’t rotate it twice. You can check the result with the EXIF viewer.

Is it safe to convert private photos here?

Yes. The JPG is decoded and re-saved by your browser on your own device; no file is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards everything.
