Find the real best value with a unit price calculator
Is the 1 kg bag cheaper than two 500 g packs? Is the “family size” box really a bargain? Shelf prices make these questions hard, because every pack is a different size. The unit price calculator converts each product to the same unit — price per kg, per 100 g, per litre, per ounce or per item — so you can see at a glance which one gives you the most for your money.
Enter the price and size of two to six products. Sizes can be in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, millilitres, litres, US or UK fluid ounces, gallons or simple counts, and multipacks are handled with the “Packs” field. The cheapest option is highlighted, every other product shows how much more it costs per unit, and you see how much you save by choosing the best one. It is handy in the supermarket aisle, for online grocery orders and for comparing bulk buys on a phone.
How to use the Unit Price Calculator
- Choose your currency. Each product card already has an example you can overwrite.
- For each product, type a name (optional), the price, the number of packs and the size of each pack with its unit — for example 2 packs × 500 g.
- Press “Add product” to compare up to six items, or the × button to remove one.
- Pick the unit to compare in “Compare the price per” — per 100 g, kg, oz or lb for weight; per 100 ml, litre, fl oz or gallon for volume; per item or dozen for counts.
- The best value is highlighted in green. Check the table for the full ranking and the percentage difference.
- Press “Copy comparison” to share the result or save it in your shopping notes.

Sensible mistakes caught
If you compare a product sold by weight with one sold by volume, the calculator tells you instead of giving a wrong answer.
How unit price is calculated
unit price = price ÷ total quantity, where total quantity = packs × size of each pack, converted to a common base unit. The result is then expressed per the unit you choose.
Example: rice costs ₹55 for 500 g, ₹98 for 1 kg and ₹460 for 5 kg. Per kg that is ₹110, ₹98 and ₹92. The 5 kg bag is the best value — 16.4% cheaper per kg than the 500 g pack — and buying 5 kg that way instead of in small packs saves ₹90.
Imperial example: a 12 oz box of cereal at $3.49 costs 29.1¢ per oz, an 18 oz box at $4.79 costs 26.6¢ per oz, and a twin pack of 2 × 20 oz at $9.99 costs 25.0¢ per oz.
Conversion factors used
Weight and volume can’t be compared directly without knowing the product’s density, so compare like with like. For other conversions, see the weight converter and the volume converter.
| Unit | Equals | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | 1,000 g | Weight |
| 1 oz (avoirdupois) | 28.3495 g | Weight |
| 1 lb | 16 oz = 453.592 g | Weight |
| 1 L | 1,000 ml | Volume |
| 1 US fl oz | 29.5735 ml | Volume |
| 1 UK fl oz | 28.4131 ml | Volume |
| 1 US gallon | 128 US fl oz = 3.785 L | Volume |
Smart shopping tips
- Bigger is not always cheaper. Promotions on small packs regularly beat the bulk size, so check the unit price every time.
- Watch the shelf label units. Shelf labels sometimes show one product per 100 g and the next per kg — convert them to the same unit before comparing.
- Only buy in bulk what you will use. A cheaper unit price is no saving if half the pack expires before you finish it.
- Factor in discounts. Work out the sale price first with the discount calculator, then enter it here.
Unit Price Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the unit price?
Divide the price by the quantity. A 750 g pack costing ₹120 is 120 ÷ 0.75 = ₹160 per kg. With multipacks, multiply the pack size by the number of packs first. The unit price calculator does all of this, including unit conversions.
Which is cheaper, a bigger or a smaller pack?
Usually the bigger pack has a lower unit price, but not always — offers on smaller sizes are common. Enter both and the calculator shows which one really costs less per kg, litre or item.
Can I compare ounces with grams?
Yes. Choose oz for one product and g for the other; both are converted using 1 oz = 28.3495 g, and you can display the result per oz, lb, 100 g or kg.
What is the difference between US and UK fluid ounces?
A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml and a UK (imperial) fluid ounce is 28.41 ml, about 4% smaller. Choose the one printed on the label for an accurate comparison.
Why can’t I compare a product in ml with one in grams?
Millilitres measure volume and grams measure weight. Converting between them needs the product’s density, which differs from one product to another, so the calculator asks you to compare products sold the same way.
