Retirement date calculator for India: find your superannuation date
This retirement date calculator gives the date of superannuation from your date of birth. By default it applies the central government rule in Fundamental Rule 56(a): you retire on the last day of the month in which you reach 60, and if you were born on the 1st of a month you retire on the last day of the month before. That is why someone born on 1 January 1966 retires on 31 December 2025, not in January 2026.
Change the retirement age (58, 62, 65 or any age from 40 to 80) or the rule for other employers, add your date of joining to see the length of service at retirement, and add an “as on” date to see how much time is left. It also works as a joining date to retirement calculator for service-length questions.
How to use the Retirement Date Calculator (India)
- Enter your date of birth and the retirement age (60 for central government).
- Choose the rule: central government (FR 56), last day of the birthday month, or on the birthday.
- Optionally add your date of joining and an “as on” date, or press Today.
- Read the retirement date, the weekday, the first day after retirement, service at retirement and time left.
- Copy the summary to paste into an application or a note.
Retirement Date Calculator (India) features
FR 56 rule built in
Last day of the birthday month, with the earlier-month rule for a birth on the 1st.
Any retirement age
Use 58, 60, 62, 65 or another age for state, bank, university or private service.
Service and time left
Joining date to retirement in years, months and days, and the time left from any date.
Leap days handled
A 29 February birthday falls on 28 February in non-leap years; the month-end rule gives the right month anyway.
How the superannuation date is worked out
Take your 60th birthday: a person born on 15 June 1970 reaches 60 on 15 June 2030. Under FR 56(a) retirement is on the afternoon of the last day of that month, 30 June 2030, and the first day without service is 1 July 2030. Someone born on 2 June gets the same month. Someone born on 1 June 1970 is treated as attaining the age on the last day of the month before, so retires on 31 May 2030.
The month-end rule means a retirement can come almost a month after your birthday, or, for a birth on the 1st, on the day before it. Pension, gratuity and leave encashment are all counted up to the retirement date, so a day matters. For the benefits themselves, see the gratuity calculator and the central government pension calculator.
| Date of birth | Age | Date of retirement (FR 56) |
|---|---|---|
| 15 June 1970 | 60 | 30 June 2030 |
| 1 January 1966 | 60 | 31 December 2025 |
| 1 March 1965 | 60 | 28 February 2025 |
| 29 February 1964 | 60 | 29 February 2024 |
Other employers and the limits of this tool
- The rule is for central government servants. The age of superannuation differs by service: states often use 58 to 62, and universities, courts, defence and public-sector companies have their own. Enter the age from your appointment terms.
- Many private employers retire staff on the birthday or at the end of the birthday month; use the other two rules for that, and check your contract.
- Extensions, re-employment, voluntary retirement and special categories can change the actual last day. The calculator shows the date the rule gives, not an order from your department.
- Service length counts both the joining day and the retirement day. To add several jobs together, use the work experience calculator.
Retirement Date Calculator (India) FAQ
At what age do central government employees retire?
At 60, under FR 56(a), on the afternoon of the last day of the month in which they reach that age. Different services can have a different age.
What if my date of birth is the 1st of the month?
You retire on the last day of the previous month. Born on 1 January 1966, the date is 31 December 2025.
How do I calculate my retirement date from my date of birth?
Add 60 years (or your retirement age) to your date of birth, then take the last day of that month; if you were born on the 1st, take the last day of the month before. The calculator does this for you.
How do I calculate service from joining date to retirement?
Enter the joining date. The calculator counts calendar months from joining to the retirement date, including both days, and shows the result in years, months and days.
Does this work for state government or private jobs?
Yes, if you change the retirement age and pick the rule your employer uses. The FR 56 rule itself applies to central government employees.
Is the result official?
No. It applies a published rule to your date of birth; your department’s order decides the date.
