Professional tax calculator for every state slab
Professional tax is a small state tax on salaries and professions, deducted by your employer each month and shown on your payslip as “PT” or “P. Tax”. Each state sets its own slab, some collect it monthly, others half-yearly or yearly, and several states do not levy it at all. This professional tax calculator takes your gross monthly salary and state and shows the amount for every month from April to March, the slab it comes from, and what you would pay in every other state at the same salary.
It uses the same dated slab table as the in-hand salary calculator, so the two always agree. Results are estimates for salaried employees, not tax or legal advice.
How to use the Professional Tax Calculator
- Choose your state — or the city, for Tamil Nadu, where Chennai Corporation rates are used.
- Enter your gross salary per month before PF and other deductions.
- In Maharashtra, choose men or women: women have a higher exemption limit.
- Read the yearly total, the month-by-month row and the slab table. The last table compares every state at your salary.
- For a state that is not listed, choose “Other state” and type the monthly amount from your payslip or the state schedule.

Is there professional tax in Delhi?
No. Delhi does not levy professional tax on salaries, and neither do Haryana, Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh. Odisha repealed its professional tax from 1 April 2026. If your payslip from one of these places shows a PT deduction, ask your payroll team which state’s law they are applying — usually the state where you work, not the head office.
How it works
For monthly schemes the calculator finds the slab your gross monthly salary falls in and repeats it for twelve months, swapping in the February amount where the state uses one. For half-yearly schemes it multiplies your monthly salary by six, finds the half-yearly tax and spreads it evenly. For Madhya Pradesh it uses annual income, divides the yearly tax into whole rupees for eleven months and puts the remainder in March. Worked example: ₹30,000 a month in Mumbai is ₹200 × 11 + ₹300 = ₹2,500.
Professional tax you pay is deductible from salary income under the old tax regime (section 19 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, formerly 16(iii)), up to ₹2,500. The new regime gives no deduction for it. Compare both with the income tax calculator.
Sources and limits
