A place value chart for the Indian and international systems
Type any number and this place value chart shows it two ways at once: in the Indian system (ones, thousands, lakhs, crores) and the international system (ones, thousands, millions, billions). Each digit sits under its place, the periods are colour-coded, and you also get the number with the right commas, its number name in both systems, the expanded form, and the face value and place value of every digit.
It handles decimals to thousandths, so it doubles as a place value chart for decimals. Teachers and parents can print a place value chart printable — blank for practice or filled in as an answer key — for a whole list of numbers, sized for A4 or Letter.
How to use the Place Value Chart (Indian & International)
- Type a number, for example 72345618 or 306.25. Commas are optional.
- Read the Indian chart (7 crore, 23 lakh…) and the international chart (72 million…) and the number names.
- Use the face value and place value table to see what each digit is worth.
- For a worksheet, list numbers one per line, choose Indian, international or both, and tick “Fill in the digits” for an answer key.
- Print it or download a PDF or PNG.

Indian and international place value chart
Both systems give each place the same value; they group the places into periods differently. The Indian system groups the first three places, then twos; the international system groups in threes.
| Place value | Indian name | International name |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ones | Ones |
| 10 | Tens | Tens |
| 100 | Hundreds | Hundreds |
| 1,000 | Thousands | Thousands |
| 10,000 | Ten thousands | Ten thousands |
| 1,00,000 = 100,000 | Lakh | Hundred thousand |
| 10,00,000 = 1,000,000 | Ten lakh | Million |
| 1,00,00,000 = 10,000,000 | Crore | Ten million |
| 10,00,00,000 = 100,000,000 | Ten crore | Hundred million |
| 1,00,00,00,000 = 1,000,000,000 | Hundred crore (arab) | Billion |
Commas, face value and place value
In the Indian system the first comma comes after three digits from the right, then after every two: 7,23,45,618. In the international system commas come after every three digits: 72,345,618. The face value of a digit is the digit itself; its place value is the digit times the value of its place. In 72,345,618 the 3 has face value 3 and place value 3,00,000 (three lakh, or 300,000).
For decimals, places to the right of the point are tenths, hundredths and thousandths: in 306.25, the 2 is worth 2/10 = 0.2 and the 5 is worth 5/100 = 0.05.
Using it in class
Class 4 and 5 lessons usually stop at lakhs or ten lakhs; Class 6 (“Knowing our numbers”) goes to crores and compares both systems. Choose how many places each printed chart has, print blank charts for practice and the filled version as the key. For spelling numbers in words up to any size, the number to words converter helps; for ordering and comparing numbers, try the number line generator.
