Make a meme in seconds
The classic meme format is simple: a picture, a line of bold white capital letters with a black outline at the top, and a punchline at the bottom. The Meme Generator recreates that look faithfully — Impact-style lettering, a crisp outline that stays readable on any background, and captions that wrap and shrink to fit — so you can focus on the joke.
Upload any picture or start from a blank canvas in square, landscape, portrait or story size. Add as many extra text boxes as you like and drag them into place with your mouse or finger, then download the finished meme as a PNG or JPG. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is added to your image — no watermark, no account.
How to use the Meme Generator
- Upload a picture (or paste one with Ctrl+V), or choose a size and colour and press “Use blank canvas”.
- Type your Top text and Bottom text. Press Enter to force a new line; long captions wrap on their own.
- Press “Add a text box” for extra captions, then drag the dashed boxes on the preview to position them.
- Adjust the font, text size, colours and outline thickness, or untick ALL CAPS for normal lettering.
- Choose PNG or JPG and press “Download meme”.

Auto-wrap and auto-fit
Captions break into lines at the image width and shrink if they would cover too much of the picture.

Add labels anywhere on the image for multi-panel jokes and reaction memes; drag them with mouse, pen or touch.
Blank canvas option
Start from a solid colour in square, 16:9, 4:5 or 9:16 story format for text-only memes and quote posts.
Full control
Five fonts, size from 4% to 20% of the width, any fill and outline colour, adjustable outline thickness.

Made entirely in your browser. Your picture is not uploaded and the download carries no branding.
Why memes use Impact, white text and a black outline
Impact is a heavy, condensed typeface that was installed on almost every Windows and Mac computer in the 2000s, when “image macros” took off on forums. Its thick strokes stay legible when an image is shrunk to a thumbnail, and white letters with a black outline remain readable whether the background is dark sky, bright snow or a busy photo. Upper case adds to the shouting, deadpan tone.
Many phones do not include Impact, so this meme maker automatically falls back to Anton, an open-source font with very similar proportions loaded from Google Fonts. If neither is available, Arial Black is used.
Tips for memes that land
- Keep it short. Setup on top, punchline on the bottom. If you need more than two lines each, the joke may work better as a text box near the relevant part of the picture.
- Leave the faces clear. Crop the picture with Crop Image so there is sky, wall or floor where the text goes.
- Pick the right shape. Square works everywhere; use 4:5 portrait for Instagram feeds and 9:16 for Stories and Status updates.
- Adjust contrast first. A washed-out photo can be fixed with Image Filters before you add captions.
- Save as PNG for sharp text, JPG for smaller files. Messaging apps recompress images anyway, so PNG gives the cleanest starting point.
Using images responsibly
Memes often reuse film stills, news photos and other people’s pictures. Parody and commentary are treated generously in many countries, but rules differ, and commercial use of someone else’s photo or likeness can require permission. When in doubt, use your own photos, images you have a licence for, or a blank canvas. Want to sign your creation? Add a small credit with Watermark Image, or combine several memes into one post with the collage maker.
Meme Generator FAQ
How do I make a meme with top and bottom text?
Upload your picture, type the top line and the bottom line, and press “Download meme”. The meme generator draws them in classic white Impact-style capitals with a black outline.
Can I add more than two captions?
Yes. Press “Add a text box” as many times as you need. Each box gets its own text field and can be dragged anywhere on the picture.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Upload from your gallery, type the captions and drag extra text boxes with your finger. When the picture has extra text boxes, scroll the page by swiping outside the picture.
Why doesn’t the text look like Impact on my phone?
Most phones do not ship with the Impact font, so the tool uses Anton, a free font with nearly identical proportions. The downloaded image looks the same everywhere because the text is drawn into the pixels.
Is there a watermark on the meme?
No. Your meme is downloaded exactly as you see it, without any logo or branding.
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. The meme is drawn on a canvas in your browser and saved straight to your device.
