Draft a legal notice in minutes, in plain English
A legal notice is a formal letter that tells the other side what they owe you, gives them a deadline, and says what you will do if they ignore it. This free legal notice generator drafts four common kinds used in India: a notice to a landlord who will not return your security deposit, a notice to recover money owed (a loan, unpaid dues or an invoice), a consumer notice for a defective product or poor service, and a notice of your own on any other matter.
Fill in the facts and the notice is written for you in the usual numbered “That …” form, sent by you or on an advocate’s letterhead, ready to download as a PDF or Word file. Everything stays in your browser. It is a draft to edit, not legal advice; have a lawyer check it before you send it, especially when a lot of money is involved.
How to use the Legal Notice Generator
- Pick the type of notice and whether you send it yourself or through an advocate.
- Enter your name and address, then the name and address of the person or company you are writing to.
- Fill in what happened — the deposit and the date you vacated, the money and when it fell due, or the product and what went wrong.
- Set the days to comply (15 is usual) and, if you want, the interest you claim; tick the Section 80 box if the other side is the Government.
- Download the PDF or Word file, sign it and send it by Registered Post A.D., Speed Post or email, and keep the proof of delivery.

Which notice, and what happens next
Periods checked on 30 October 2026 against the Limitation Act schedule (the Tripura High Court’s copy of the Act). The Consumer Protection Act’s two-year rule was taken from bare-act sites (secondary sources). Work out your own last date with the limitation period calculator, and the filing cost with the court fee calculator. For a bounced cheque, use the dedicated cheque bounce notice generator instead — that notice has a strict 30-day deadline.
| Notice | If they do not comply | Usual time limit to go to court |
|---|---|---|
| Security deposit refund | Civil suit for recovery (or a small-claims route where your state has one) | Three years — Limitation Act, 1963, Article 113 |
| Money owed (loan, dues, invoice) | Civil suit for recovery with interest | Three years — e.g. Article 19 (money lent) or Article 14 (goods sold) |
| Defective product or poor service | Complaint to the District Consumer Commission (filed online on e-Daakhil) | Two years from the cause of action — Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Section 69 |
| Notice to the Government | Civil suit only after the two months expire | Section 80, Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 |
Tips for a notice that works
- Stick to facts and dates. Say what was agreed, what you did, and what they failed to do. Leave out insults and threats.
- Ask for one clear thing. A specific amount by a specific deadline is easier to act on — and to prove in court later.
- Keep proof. Postal receipts, tracking reports, the A.D. card and email delivery records show the notice was received.
- Attach copies, never originals. List the rent agreement, receipts or invoices as enclosures and keep the originals safe.
Legal Notice Generator FAQ
What is a legal notice and is it compulsory?
A legal notice is a formal written demand before legal action. For most private disputes it is not compulsory, but it often settles the matter. It is required before suing the Government (Section 80 CPC) and before a cheque bounce case.
Can I send a legal notice without a lawyer?
Yes. Anyone can send a legal notice in their own name. This legal notice generator writes it for you; a lawyer’s review is still a good idea.
How do I send a legal notice to a landlord for my deposit?
Choose “Refund of a security deposit”, enter the rented premises, the agreement date, the deposit and the date you handed over the keys, then send the signed notice by Registered Post A.D. and keep the receipt.
How many days should a legal notice give?
Fifteen days is common, and 7 to 30 days is reasonable. A notice under Section 80 CPC must allow two months before a suit is filed.
What if the other side does not reply?
You can go ahead with the step named in the notice — a civil suit, a consumer complaint or another proceeding — within the limitation period.
Is my information stored or uploaded?
No. The notice is built in your browser, and drafts stay in this browser’s storage until you delete them.
