IDV calculator: what your vehicle is insured for
This IDV calculator works out the Insured Declared Value of a car, bike or commercial vehicle in India. Enter the current ex-showroom price and the vehicle’s age, and it applies the standard age-wise depreciation schedule that insurers use, adds any accessories or CNG/LPG kit you declare, and shows the IDV for every age band side by side.
IDV is the most an insurer will pay if your vehicle is stolen or damaged beyond repair in that policy year, and it drives your own-damage premium. Knowing the figure before you buy or renew helps you spot a quote whose IDV has been cut to make the premium look cheaper. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to calculate IDV for a car or bike
- Choose Car, Two-wheeler or Commercial vehicle.
- Enter the ex-showroom price of the same model and variant as it is sold today.
- Pick the age of the vehicle, or open Work out the age from dates and enter the first-registration and policy start dates.
- Add any accessories not included in the ex-showroom price and a CNG / LPG kit fitted later.
- Read the IDV, the depreciation amount and the 75% total-loss line, then compare with the chart for other ages.
IDV Calculator features
Standard IDV schedule
The six age bands from 5% to 50% depreciation, with a clear message when the vehicle is over 5 years old.
Age from dates
Counts calendar months from the first-registration date, so a car exactly 6 months old still gets the 5% band.
Accessories and kits
Declared accessories and a later CNG or LPG kit are depreciated by the same rate and added to the total.
Total-loss line
Shows 75% of the IDV — above that repair cost a claim is usually treated as a constructive total loss.
Chart for your price
The IDV for every age band at once, so you can see how it will fall at future renewals.
IDV formula and depreciation chart
IDV = (ex-showroom price + accessories not included in it) × (1 − depreciation rate). The price is the manufacturer’s listed selling price of the same make and model at the start of the policy, without registration charges and insurance. For a ₹8,00,000 car aged 1–2 years: 8,00,000 × (1 − 0.20) = ₹6,40,000.
The rates below come from General Regulation 8 of the India Motor Tariff and are still printed in insurers’ policy wordings (IFFCO-Tokio’s IDV depreciation table, dated 25 April 2025, checked on 19 October 2026). The same schedule applies to cars, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles.
| Age of the vehicle | Depreciation for fixing IDV |
|---|---|
| Not exceeding 6 months | 5% |
| 6 months to 1 year | 15% |
| 1 to 2 years | 20% |
| 2 to 3 years | 30% |
| 3 to 4 years | 40% |
| 4 to 5 years | 50% |
| Over 5 years, or a discontinued model | Agreed between insurer and insured |
IDV for bikes, commercial vehicles and older vehicles
An IDV calculator for a bike works exactly like one for a car: a ₹1,00,000 scooter aged 2–3 years has an IDV of about ₹70,000. Goods carriers, taxis and buses follow the same age bands; their premium differs, not the depreciation rate.
Once a vehicle is more than 5 years old, or its model has been discontinued, there is no fixed rate. You and the insurer agree the IDV, usually from its condition and current market price, so get several quotes and check them against used prices for the same model and year.
For the value of a car as an asset or for income tax, use the car depreciation calculator; for the full cost of owning it, the cost per km calculator.
Choosing an IDV when you buy or renew
- Too low: the premium falls a little, but a theft or total-loss claim pays less than the vehicle is worth.
- Too high: you pay more premium, but a total-loss claim is still limited to the actual loss and the policy terms.
- Insurers may move the calculated IDV up or down within a range with your agreement, based on factors such as usage and location — compare like-for-like IDVs across quotes.
- Within a policy year the IDV is treated as the market value; it is reset at each renewal using the then-current price and the next age band.
IDV Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the IDV of my car?
Take the current ex-showroom price of the same model, add accessories not included in it, and subtract the depreciation for its age: 5% up to 6 months, 15% up to 1 year, then 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% for each further year up to 5 years. The IDV calculator above does this for you.
Is the IDV calculator for bikes different?
No. Two-wheelers use the same age-wise depreciation schedule as cars and commercial vehicles; only the price differs.
What is the IDV of a car older than 5 years?
There is no fixed rate. The IDV is agreed between you and the insurer, usually based on the vehicle’s condition and market value.
Does IDV include road tax and registration?
No. It is based on the ex-showroom price, which excludes registration charges and insurance.
Should I choose the lowest IDV to save on premium?
Usually not. A lower IDV reduces what you receive after a theft or total loss, while the premium saving is small. Pick an IDV close to the vehicle’s real value.
Is this an official IDV quote?
No. It is an estimate from the standard schedule; your insurer’s quote can differ slightly. It is not insurance advice.
