Hindi font previewer with a real conjunct and matra check
Choosing a Hindi font for a wedding card, a shop sign, a YouTube thumbnail or a website is hard when every font demo shows English letters. This Hindi font previewer shows your Devanagari text — Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit or Nepali — in 30 free fonts at once: sans, serif, display and handwritten styles, regular or bold, on plain, wedding-card or dark backgrounds.
It also checks what other previews cannot: whether each font actually forms the conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध), the reph in र्क, the rakar in क्र, the special रु and रू, and attaches matras correctly. The check shapes the text with HarfBuzz — the same shaping engine Chrome, Android and LibreOffice use — and lists every cluster that falls back to a visible halant (्) or is missing.
Every built-in font is released under the SIL Open Font License, so it may be used for commercial printing and websites. You can add your own font files too: the page tells you whether each is a proper Unicode font or an old legacy font such as Kruti Dev, DevLys or Chanakya.
How to use the Hindi Font Previewer
- Type or paste your text in Unicode Hindi, or pick a Sample text such as Wedding card, Invitation lines or Conjunct & matra test.
- Scroll the cards: fonts load as they come into view and each card shows its shaping result below the preview.
- Narrow the list with Sans, Serif, Display or Handwritten, switch to Bold, change the Size and the Card colours.
- Drop your own TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 files on Add your own fonts to compare them with the free ones.
- Press PNG on a card to download your text as a 1200-pixel image, CSS to copy the code for a website, or Get font to open the font’s page and download it.
Hindi Font Previewer features
30 open-licence fonts
Noto Sans and Serif Devanagari, Hind, Mukta, Poppins, Tiro Devanagari Hindi, Yatra One, Baloo 2, Kalam, Amita, Rozha One, Martel, Eczar and more — all SIL OFL 1.1, from pinned Fontsource packages.
Shaping check per font
24 test clusters (conjuncts, reph, rakar, रु/रू, matras, chandrabindu, nukta, ॐ, danda, Devanagari digits, ₹) shaped with HarfBuzz; fonts that fail say exactly where.
Missing characters and typing errors
Characters of your text a font lacks are listed, and a dotted circle (◌) warning appears when a matra or sign is not attached to a letter.
Unicode or legacy?
Uploaded fonts are classified: Unicode Devanagari, a legacy Kruti Dev/DevLys-type font (previewed through Kruti Dev 010 keystrokes), or a font with no Hindi at all.
Wedding-card look and PNG
Maroon-on-cream card colours and a one-click PNG of your text in any font.
Copy-ready CSS
An @import for self-hosting with Fontsource plus the font-family rule with a Devanagari fallback.
Unicode fonts vs legacy fonts (Kruti Dev, DevLys, Chanakya)
In a Unicode font (Mangal, Nirmala UI, Noto Sans Devanagari and every font on this page) the letter क is stored as the code point U+0915, so text stays Hindi in any font, can be searched, and is read correctly by Google and screen readers. The font’s OpenType tables then build conjuncts and place matras while you type.
A legacy font such as Kruti Dev 010, DevLys 010 or Chanakya draws Devanagari shapes on Latin keys: the file still contains “d” where you see क. Type Unicode Hindi in such a font and you get boxes or Latin letters; send the document to someone without the font and they see gibberish. Government typing tests and older DTP work still use them, so the page previews them through Kruti Dev 010 keystrokes. To turn old Kruti Dev text into Unicode, use the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter; to type Unicode Hindi from an English keyboard, the Hindi typing tool or the Devanagari transliterator.
What the shaping check found (30 October 2026)
Run on the Fontsource 5.3.0 Devanagari files: 27 of the 30 fonts pass every test cluster. Palanquin and Modak have no rupee sign (₹ falls back to another font), and Kurale has no reph or special रु/रू forms — र्क shows र with a visible halant — so avoid it for running Hindi text. The results are recomputed live in your browser for every font and for your own text.
| Test | Examples | Passes when |
|---|---|---|
| Conjuncts | क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र द्ध द्व ह्म स्त प्त श्री | the halant is absorbed into a ligature or half form |
| Reph and rakar | र्क · क्र ट्र | the र becomes the mark above or the stroke below |
| Special forms | रु रू | the font substitutes its own combined shape |
| Matras and signs | कि कु कृ हँ क़ | no missing glyph and no dotted circle |
| Characters | ॐ । १२३ ₹ | the font contains them |
Hindi Font Previewer FAQ
Which Hindi font is best for a wedding card?
For formal cards, serif and display fonts such as Tiro Devanagari Hindi, Rozha One, Yatra One, Martel or Eczar read as traditional; Kalam and Amita look hand-lettered. Preview your names in each, pick Wedding card colours, and download a PNG to share with the printer.
Are these Hindi fonts free for commercial use?
Yes. All 30 are released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which allows printing, logos, websites and apps. You may not sell the font files on their own. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why do some letters break apart or show ् in my font?
The font lacks the conjunct or reph form, or your software is not shaping the text. The card lists the clusters that fail; choose a font where all 24 test clusters pass.
How do I know if a font is Unicode or Kruti Dev?
Add it with Add your own fonts. A Unicode font is labelled Unicode and checked; a Kruti Dev-type font is labelled legacy and previewed through Kruti Dev keystrokes.
Can I use these fonts for Marathi and Sanskrit?
Yes — they cover the Devanagari block. Try the Marathi and Sanskrit shloka samples; check ळ and the vedic marks you need in the preview.
Why does the page download fonts?
The free fonts are fetched from the jsDelivr CDN when their cards scroll into view, and the HarfBuzz engine once. Your text and your own fonts never leave your device.
