Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator (EIP-1559)

Gas × (base fee + tip) in ETH and your currency for transfers, token sends, swaps and mints, with an L2 view.

Gas prices change every 12 seconds. Type the base fee and tip your wallet shows, or paste an RPC reply below. Gas units other than a plain ETH transfer are rough typical values — your wallet’s estimate is the real one.

How the Ethereum gas fee calculator works

Every Ethereum transaction pays for the computation it uses. The amount of work is measured in gas units — exactly 21,000 for a plain ETH transfer, more for token transfers, swaps and NFT mints — and each unit is priced in gwei, a billionth of an ether. Since the London upgrade (EIP-1559) the price per gas has two parts: a base fee set by the network for each block and burned, and a priority fee (tip) you add for the validator. This gas fee calculator multiplies them out: fee = gas × (base fee + tip), in ETH and in your currency.

Pick a common transaction or type the gas units from your wallet, enter the base fee and tip, and optionally your max fee per gas and the ETH price. You also see how much is burned, how far the base fee can rise in a few busy blocks, and what the same gas would cost on a layer-2 network. A table prices the usual transaction types at once.

Nothing is fetched automatically — there is an optional box to paste a fee reply from an RPC provider. The page is informational only and not investment advice.

How to use the Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator

  1. Choose a Transaction preset, or type the Gas units your wallet estimates.
  2. Enter the Base fee and Priority fee in gwei, as your wallet or a gas tracker shows them.
  3. Optionally add your Max fee per gas, the ETH price and, for a layer 2, its gas price and L1 data fee.
  4. Read the fee in ETH and money, the burn and tip split, and the table of common transactions.
  5. To use current figures, copy the eth_feeHistory request, send it to your RPC provider and paste the reply.

Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator features

EIP-1559 exact

The tip is capped so base + tip never exceeds your max fee, exactly as the protocol charges it.

Presets

ETH transfer, ERC-20 send and approve, DEX swap, NFT mint and NFT transfer, editable.

Base fee outlook

The base fee can change by at most 12.5% a block; the page shows the ceiling after 1, 5 and 10 full blocks.

The gas fee formula

EIP-1559 (status Final) defines the price you pay per gas as base fee + min(max priority fee, max fee − base fee) and states that the base fee is always burned; only the tip goes to the block proposer (checked 24 October 2026). The fee is that price times the gas the transaction actually uses. Your wallet’s gas limit can be higher, but unused gas is not charged.

Worked example: sending ETH uses 21,000 gas. With a base fee of 1 gwei and a 0.1 gwei tip the price is 1.1 gwei, so the fee is 21,000 × 1.1 = 23,100 gwei = 0.0000231 ETH; 0.000021 ETH is burned and 0.0000021 ETH goes to the validator. At an ETH price of 3,000 USD that is about 7 cents. An ERC-20 transfer of about 65,000 gas at the same price costs roughly three times as much.

Setting a max fee and reading the base fee

  • The base fee moves at most 12.5% per block. The protocol targets half-full blocks; a full block raises the next base fee by 12.5%, an empty one lowers it by 12.5%.
  • 2 × base + tip is a common max-fee setting: it survives about six consecutive full blocks (1.125⁶ ≈ 2.03) and you are still charged only the actual base fee.
  • eth_feeHistory returns the base fee of the recent blocks and of the next block, plus the tips paid at the percentiles you ask for; the paste box takes the next base fee and the median tip.
  • Layer 2 fees on OP-stack chains are L2 gas × L2 gas price plus an L1 data fee for posting the transaction to Ethereum (and, on newer versions, an operator fee). Other rollups use similar parts with different names.

Ethereum Gas Fee Calculator FAQ

How is the ETH gas fee calculated?

Gas used × (base fee + priority fee). For 21,000 gas at 1 gwei base and a 0.1 gwei tip, the fee is 23,100 gwei, or 0.0000231 ETH.

How much gas does an ERC-20 transfer use?

Usually about 45,000 to 65,000 gas, depending on the token contract and whether the recipient already holds it. Your wallet’s estimate for the actual transaction is the figure to trust.

Where do I see Ethereum gas fees right now?

Your wallet shows the current base fee and suggested tip before you confirm, and block explorers run gas trackers. You can also paste an eth_feeHistory reply from your RPC provider here.

What is the difference between base fee and priority fee?

The base fee is set by the protocol for each block and burned. The priority fee is a tip to the validator that you choose; a higher tip can get you included sooner when blocks are busy.

Why are fees lower on layer 2?

L2s execute transactions off the main chain and post compressed data back to Ethereum, so you pay a small L2 gas fee plus a share of the L1 data cost.

Does this gas fee calculator fetch live prices?

No. It makes no network requests; you type the fees and the ETH price, or paste an RPC reply you fetched yourself.
