One class hour plus two hours of study per credit per week is the minimum in the US federal definition of a credit hour (34 CFR 600.2), which a school may exceed. Labs, studios and clinicals often use more class time and less study time per credit, so edit the hours to match your syllabus. “Full-time” at 12 credits is a common US undergraduate threshold that each school sets itself.

A credit hours calculator based on the federal definition

This credit hours calculator turns the credits on your schedule into a realistic weekly workload. By the rule most US colleges follow, each credit hour stands for about one hour in class and two hours of study outside class every week, so a 3-credit course means roughly 9 hours of work a week. Enter your courses and the tool adds up class time, study time and the total for the whole term.

It also shows whether your load counts as full-time, how a quarter-system load compares with semester credits, and how many terms are left to reach the credits your degree needs. Ratios are editable for labs, studios and other courses that follow a different pattern.

How to use the Credit Hours Calculator

  1. Type the credits for each course this term, such as 3 3 4 3 1.
  2. Choose the term length: a 15-week semester, a 10 or 12-week quarter, or your own number of weeks.
  3. Leave the ratios at 1 class hour and 2 study hours per credit, or change them to match your syllabus.
  4. Set the full-time threshold your school uses and, if you like, the credits needed for the degree and the credits done so far.
  5. Read the weekly hours, the term total and how many terms remain at this load.

What a credit hour means

The US Department of Education defines a credit hour in 34 CFR 600.2 as an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester or trimester hour of credit, or ten to twelve weeks for one quarter hour of credit, or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The idea descends from the Carnegie unit, which counted time spent in class (a “hour” of 50 minutes by custom) to measure progress.

The words “not less than” matter: this is a floor. Many courses ask for more, and a studio, lab or clinical credit may be 2–3 contact hours with little homework. Your syllabus and your school’s catalogue are the authority on a particular course.

Worked example

Five 3-credit courses add up to 15 credits. At 1 class hour and 2 study hours per credit that is 15 hours in class and 30 hours of study, or 45 hours a week. Over a 15-week semester it is 675 hours. At 120 credits for a bachelor’s degree, 15 credits a term finishes in 8 semesters.

Semester, quarter and other systems

A quarter credit is two thirds of a semester credit, so 45 quarter credits equal 30 semester credits. Outside the US, systems count total hours instead: ECTS uses 25–30 hours per credit and UK credits are based on 10 notional learning hours each. Use the ECTS credit converter to move between them, and the GPA calculator to weight grades by credits.

Planning tips

  • Treat 3 hours per credit as a starting point and adjust after the first graded assignment.
  • A 15-credit load plus a part-time job can pass 55 hours a week; budget realistically.
  • Use the study plan generator or the timetable maker to place those hours in a week.
