Make a video contact sheet in seconds

A video contact sheet — also called a thumbnail grid, storyboard or “caps” sheet — shows a whole video at a glance: frames taken at even intervals, laid out in rows with their timestamps, under a header that lists the file name, size, duration, resolution, codecs and bitrate. It is the quickest way to review footage, catalogue an archive, share a preview with a client or check that an export is complete.

Choose the number of columns and rows, the sheet width and the colours, and the sheet is built straight away in your browser. The frames are decoded on your device, so private footage never leaves it, and you can save the result as a PNG or JPG image.

How to use the Video Contact Sheet

  1. Drop a video on the box. A sheet with 4 columns and 5 rows is made automatically.
  2. Change the columns and rows to set how many frames appear; they are spread evenly across the video.
  3. Pick the sheet width, colours and spacing, and choose whether to show the header and the timestamps.
  4. Optionally type a title instead of the file name.
  5. Press “Download contact sheet” to save it as JPG or PNG.

Video Contact Sheet features

Evenly spaced frames

Frame i is taken at the middle of the i-th equal slice of the video, so the first and last frames avoid black openings and end cards.

Complete file details

The header lists file name, size in megabytes and bytes, duration, overall bitrate, video codec with its codec string, resolution, frame rate, rotation, audio codec, sample rate and channels.

Readable timestamps

Each tile carries its time in a dark label in the corner, legible on bright and dark frames.

Up to 4K wide

Sheets from 1280 to 3840 pixels wide with up to 10 columns and 20 rows — 200 frames on one image.

Correct aspect ratio

Tiles follow the video’s display shape, including rotated phone videos and anamorphic pixels.

Private and free

Decoding uses Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) with WebCodecs in your browser; nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

What contact sheets are used for

  • Reviewing footage: see every scene of a long recording without scrubbing through it.
  • Archives and media libraries: a sheet next to each file makes old videos easy to identify.
  • Client and team previews: send one image instead of a large video file.
  • Quality checks: confirm an export has no black sections, wrong aspect ratio or missing ending.
  • Forum and marketplace listings: show what a video contains, with its technical details.

Video Contact Sheet FAQ

What is a video contact sheet?

It is a single image with a grid of frames from a video, each marked with its timestamp, usually with the file’s technical details at the top. It lets you see the content of a video at a glance.

How are the frames chosen?

The video is divided into as many equal parts as there are tiles, and the frame at the middle of each part is used. Change the rows and columns to get more or fewer frames.

Which details appear in the header?

File name (or your title), file size, duration, overall bitrate, video codec and codec string, resolution, frame rate, rotation, audio codec with sample rate and channels, and the container format.

Can I make a sheet of a 4K or HDR video?

Yes, as long as your browser can decode it. HDR frames are tone-mapped by the browser when drawn, so colours may look flatter than on an HDR screen.

PNG or JPG?

JPG makes much smaller files and is fine for sharing. PNG is lossless and keeps the header text perfectly crisp.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The contact sheet is drawn in your browser and the video stays on your device.
