Make a contact sheet of your photos

A contact sheet shows a whole set of photos as small thumbnails on a single page, so you can see everything at a glance. Photographers have used them since the days of film to choose which frames to print. This image contact sheet maker builds the digital version: drop in a folder of photos and get neat sheets of thumbnails with the file name, pixel dimensions and date taken under each one.

Choose A4, US Letter or A3 paper at 300 dpi for printing, 4K or Full HD for screens and slides, or any custom size. Set the columns, rows, spacing and margin, pick a white, light grey or classic dark sheet, and save every sheet as a JPG or PNG — one file, or a ZIP when there are several. Photos are read and laid out in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to make a photo contact sheet

  1. Drop your photos onto the upload area or click it to choose them — up to 500 at a time.
  2. Pick the Sheet size and Orientation, then the number of Columns and Rows per sheet.
  3. Choose whether thumbnails show the whole photo or fill the cell, the sheet colour, and the order: as added, by file name or by date taken.
  4. Tick the captions you want — file name, dimensions, date and number — and type a title for the header.
  5. Flip through the preview with the arrows, then press Download for all sheets or Download this sheet for the one on screen.

Image Contact Sheet features

Real camera dates

The date taken is read from each JPEG’s EXIF data (DateTimeOriginal); photos without it use the file’s modified date.

Paper and screen sizes

A4, US Letter and A3 at 300 dpi print sharply; 4K and Full HD sheets suit slides, monitors and sharing online.

Flexible grid

From 1 to 20 columns and up to 25 rows per sheet, with spacing and margins in pixels.

Fit or fill

Show every photo uncropped with its true shape, or crop thumbnails to fill uniform cells for a tidy grid.

Three sheet styles

Clean white, light grey with white cells, or a dark background that recalls traditional contact prints.

Multi-sheet output

Large sets flow onto as many sheets as needed, numbered “Sheet 1 of 4”, and download together as a ZIP.

Choosing a sheet size and grid

Thumbnail size depends on the sheet, the grid and the margins. With the default 100 px margin, 40 px spacing and the header switched on, each cell on a portrait A4 sheet at 300 dpi is roughly:

  • Landscape photos fill wide cells best — try landscape orientation with more columns than rows.
  • Fewer, larger thumbnails make captions easier to read; captions shrink with the cell.
  • A 300 dpi A4 sheet prints at full quality on a home printer; set your print dialog to “Fit to page” or 100%.

Captions and dates explained

The first caption line shows the number and file name; long names are shortened in the middle so the extension stays visible. The second line shows the original pixel dimensions and the date. For JPEG photos from cameras and phones the date comes from the EXIF “date taken” field, so it reflects when the photo was shot even if the file was copied later. PNG, WebP and edited images often carry no EXIF date; for those the file’s last-modified date is shown instead, and the file list tells you which one was used (“taken” or “modified”). To inspect every metadata field of a photo, open it in the EXIF Viewer.

Image or PDF contact sheet?

This tool saves each sheet as an image, which is ideal for sharing in chats, adding to slides or posting online. If you want a single multi-page document to print or email — or need thumbnails of PDF pages — use the PDF Contact Sheet maker. To stitch a handful of pictures into one image without captions, the Image Joiner is quicker, and the Collage Maker makes decorative layouts for social media.

Image Contact Sheet FAQ

How do I make a contact sheet of photos?

Add your photos, choose the sheet size, columns and rows, tick the captions you want and press Download. Each sheet is saved as a JPG or PNG, and several sheets come as one ZIP file.

Does it show the date the photo was taken?

Yes, for JPEG photos that contain EXIF data — most camera and phone photos do. Photos without an EXIF date show the file’s last-modified date instead.

Can I print the contact sheet?

Yes. Choose A4, US Letter or A3; sheets are made at 300 dpi, so thumbnails and captions print sharply. For a ready-to-print PDF, use the PDF Contact Sheet maker.

How many photos fit on one sheet?

Columns × rows — 20 with the default 4 × 5 grid. Extra photos continue on further sheets automatically, up to 500 photos per batch.

Why are some thumbnails cropped?

“Fill the cell (crop)” crops every photo to the cell shape for a uniform grid. Choose “Whole photo (fit)” to see each picture uncropped.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Photos are read, thumbnailed and laid out by your browser, and the sheets are saved directly to your device.
