A free Venn diagram maker for two, three or four sets

This Venn diagram maker draws overlapping circles you can fill in two ways. Type straight into each region — “Tea only”, “Coffee only”, “Both” — to compare and contrast two ideas for a lesson, an essay plan or a presentation slide. Or paste two, three or four lists (club members, product features, survey answers, customer IDs) and the tool sorts every item into the right overlap for you, merging duplicates and counting each region.

It handles 2, 3 and 4 sets, can size the circles so their areas match your numbers, lets you drag any label to a better spot, and downloads a sharp PNG, an editable SVG, a vector PDF on A4 or Letter, or a print-ready page. Everything runs in your browser and is saved only on your device.

How to use the Venn Diagram Maker

  1. Choose 2 sets, 3 sets or 4 sets, and give the diagram a title.
  2. Name each set and pick its colour. The region boxes below rename themselves (“Tea only”, “Tea & Coffee”).
  3. Fill the diagram: with Typing in each region, write one item per line in each box; with Sorting lists, paste one list per set and the overlaps are worked out for you.
  4. Tick Show counts to print the number of items in each region, or Area-proportional circles to size the circles by those numbers (type a count in a region to override the item count).
  5. Drag any label that sits awkwardly, then press Download PNG, SVG, PDF or Print. “Copy as text” copies every region with its items.

Venn Diagram Maker features

Two ways to fill it

Write the similarities and differences yourself, or let the tool compare up to four lists and place every item in its exact overlap — matching is case-insensitive and ignores extra spaces.

Three layouts that always show every overlap

Two circles, the classic three-circle triangle, and four ellipses for four sets, which is the smallest symmetric shape that shows all 15 combinations.

Area-proportional circles

For two or three sets the circle sizes and overlaps follow your numbers; the page tells you how close the fit is.

Draggable labels

Every region label and set name can be dragged with a mouse or finger, or nudged with the arrow keys; “Reset label positions” puts them back.

Print-quality exports

PNG at twice the screen size, SVG for Inkscape or Illustrator, a vector PDF that stays sharp at any size, and a print view that shows only the diagram.

How the proportional circles are drawn

Each circle’s area is set to its set total, so the radius is √(total ÷ π) before scaling to the page. For two sets the distance between the centres is found by bisection on the circle–circle intersection (lens) area until the overlap equals the shared count, which gives an exact drawing.

Three circles have only three centre distances to play with but seven regions to match, so an exact drawing is not always possible. The tool solves each pair’s distance exactly, places the third circle with the law of cosines, then measures every region on a 220 × 220 grid and reports the mismatch as a share of the total area. Four sets are never proportional here: no arrangement of four circles shows all 15 regions, and the ellipse layout is drawn at a fixed size.

Reading a Venn diagram: a worked example

Load the example in Sorting lists mode with three sets. Seven pupils play cricket, six play football and five play chess. Aarav and Rohan play cricket and football but not chess; Kabir and Dev play football and chess; Priya plays cricket and chess; Meera plays all three. Read outwards from the centre: the middle region is everything the sets share, each two-set overlap excludes the third set, and the outer parts are “only” that set.

In set notation the region “Cricket & Football” here is (Cricket ∩ Football) − Chess. The table under the chart lists every region with its count, so you can check a probability question such as “how many play at least two sports?” — 2 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 6. For the probability side of Venn diagrams, the probability calculator draws one for P(A), P(B) and P(A ∩ B).

Tips for a clear diagram

  • Keep each item short — a few words. Long items are shortened with “…” in the drawing; the full text stays in the table and in “Copy as text”.
  • If a region has more items than fit, the diagram shows “+N more”. Raise the text size only when regions have room, or switch to counts.
  • Pick colours that differ in lightness as well as hue, so overlaps stay readable when printed in black and white. A fill strength of 25–35% keeps text legible.
  • For a timeline of the same project use the Gantt chart maker; for brainstorming before you sort ideas, try the mind map maker.

Venn Diagram Maker FAQ

How do I make a Venn diagram online for free?

Choose the number of sets, name them, type each item in its region (or paste lists), then press Download PNG or PDF. There is no sign-up and nothing is uploaded.

Can I make a 3-circle or 4-circle Venn diagram?

Yes. Three sets use the classic three overlapping circles with seven regions. Four sets use four ellipses, because four circles cannot show all 15 overlaps.

How do I compare two lists with a Venn diagram?

Switch to “Sorting lists”, paste one list per set (one item per line) and the tool places each item in “only A”, “only B” or “both”, ignoring capital letters and extra spaces, with counts in the table.

What is a proportional Venn diagram?

One where circle and overlap areas match the numbers. Tick “Area-proportional circles”: two sets are drawn exactly; three sets match each pair exactly and the page reports how far the three-way layout is off.

Can I move the labels?

Yes — drag any region label or set name, or focus it with Tab and use the arrow keys (hold Shift for bigger steps). “Reset label positions” undoes all moves.

Can I edit the diagram later?

It is saved in this browser automatically. Use “Save JSON” to keep a file you can load on another device, or download the SVG to edit the drawing in a vector editor.
