A free org chart maker that builds the chart from a simple list
This org chart maker draws an organisation chart from text you already have. Type an indented list — each person on a line, indented under their manager — or paste rows from a spreadsheet with Name, Title, Manager and an optional Department column. The chart lays itself out: managers on top, their teams below, and small teams stacked in a tidy column so even a 100-person company fits on one page.
Click anyone to rename them, add a report, attach a photo from your phone or computer, or collapse their whole branch. Then download a PNG for a presentation, a vector PDF for printing, an SVG to edit, or a CSV to keep in your HR spreadsheet. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing — names or photos — leaves your browser.
How to use the Org Chart Maker
- Replace the example text with your people. Indented list: one person per line as
Name | Job title | Department, with two spaces (or a tab) more for each level down. CSV: a header row such asName,Title,Manager,Department. - Watch the chart redraw as you type; the line under the text box says which format it is reading. Problems such as a manager name that matches nobody are listed in a yellow box.
- Click a person and use Add report, Edit, Photo or Delete. The text is rewritten for you, so the list and the chart always agree.
- Use the round button under a manager to collapse their team (a badge shows how many are hidden), or Top two levels for a leadership-only view.
- Press Download PNG, PDF, SVG or Print. Save JSON keeps the photos too; Download CSV gives a clean Name, Title, Manager, Department table.
Org Chart Maker features
Two ways in
An indented list you can type in seconds, or CSV straight from Excel or Google Sheets with Name, Title, Manager and Department columns (an ID column is used when names repeat).
Automatic layout
A top-down tree with managers centred over their teams. “Stack team members in a column” lists individual contributors vertically, which keeps wide teams readable.
Collapsible branches
Hide any team behind a “+N” badge and open it again with one click; collapsed badges are kept in the export so readers know people are hidden.
Photos from your device
Add a photo to any box. It is cropped to a small square in your browser and drawn in a circle; it appears in the PNG, SVG, print view and PDF.
Department colours and team stats
Each department gets a colour band and a legend. The counters show headcount, levels, managers and the largest team (span of control).
Formats the text box understands
Commas, semicolons or tabs all work as CSV separators, and quoted values may contain commas ("Designer, brand"). If two rows would make two people each other’s manager, the loop is broken and reported instead of crashing the chart.
| You type | Read as |
|---|---|
Anita Rao | CEO | Leadership | Name, job title, department (pipes) |
Vikram Singh - CTO | Name and title separated by a spaced dash; two spaces = one level down |
- Priya Nair, Engineering Manager | Bullets and numbers are ignored; a comma also separates name and title |
Name,Title,Manager,Department header | CSV; each row links to its manager by name (or by ID if there is an ID column) |
| Rows with two or more commas and no indentation | CSV without a header, in the order Name, Title, Manager, Department |
Tips for a clear organisation chart
- Keep job titles short — two lines of about 25 characters fit in a box. Put long official designations in your HR file, not on the chart.
- For more than 40 or 50 people, collapse departments and make one chart per department; a reader can take in roughly 7–10 boxes across.
- Use departments rather than people for colour, and keep the number of departments under ten so the colours stay distinct.
- For a family rather than a company, the family tree maker draws couples and generations; for ID cards of the same team, try the employee ID card maker.
Org Chart Maker FAQ
How do I make an org chart for free?
Type or paste your people into the text box — indented under their managers, or as CSV with a Manager column — and the chart is drawn automatically. Download it as PNG or PDF; there is no account or watermark.
Can I create an org chart from Excel?
Yes. In Excel or Google Sheets keep columns for Name, Title and Manager (Department is optional), save or copy as CSV and paste it into the box or use “Open CSV / JSON”.
How do I add photos to the org chart?
Click a person, press Photo and pick an image from your device. It is cropped and shrunk in your browser and appears as a round picture in the box and in every export.
Can I collapse a department or team?
Yes. Click the small round button under the manager. The team folds away behind a “+N” badge showing how many people are hidden, and the badge is printed too.
Is my staff data uploaded anywhere?
No. The chart is built in your browser and saved only in this browser’s storage. Use Save JSON or Download CSV to keep a copy elsewhere.
What happens when I delete a manager?
Their direct reports move up to the deleted person’s own manager, so nobody disappears from the chart. Undo restores the previous version.
