Vastu Compass Online with Degrees

Phone compass with the 16 Vastu zones: see the degree and zone your door, plot or room faces, and save readings.

Tradition, not science. Vastu is a cultural and architectural tradition. The zone notes below repeat commonly published guidance; they are not engineering, safety or scientific advice, and no direction needs a paid remedy.

A free Vastu compass online with degrees and 16 zones

This Vastu compass online turns your phone into a direction finder with the sixteen Vastu zones drawn on the dial. Hold the phone flat, face the way you want to measure — out of your main door, towards the road from your plot, or the way you stand at the stove — and the page shows the exact degree, the zone you are facing (such as E, ENE or SW) and its range. You can switch to the classic eight directions, use magnetic or true north, and save readings for each room.

Vastu shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture. This page treats it as cultural guidance: it names each zone, its guardian deity and the uses most often suggested in published guides, and it makes no promises about health, money or luck. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Vastu Compass

  1. Open the page on a phone and press Start compass (on iPhone tap Allow). Keep away from steel doors, grilles, cars and electronics.
  2. To find which way a house faces, stand in the main doorway looking out, hold the phone flat with its top edge pointing straight ahead, and wait for the reading to settle.
  3. Read the zone and the degree. The highlighted wedge is the zone under the mark at the top of the dial.
  4. Choose what you measured and press Save this reading; repeat for the plot, kitchen or bed.
  5. Use Copy readings to share them with your architect or Vastu consultant.

Vastu Compass features

16-zone or 8-direction ring

Sixteen zones of 22.5° each, or the eight traditional directions of 45°, rotate with the dial and the current zone lights up.

Exact degrees

The heading is shown to the degree with the zone’s range, so readings near a boundary are obvious.

Magnetic or true north

The shared compass engine includes the World Magnetic Model 2025, and you can enter a declination if your consultant uses true north.

Saved readings

Name and store up to 30 readings on your device and copy them as a list.

Works without a sensor

On a laptop, drag the dial to match a real compass and read the zones by hand.

Facing direction and how the zones are measured

Vastu guides describe a house by the direction its main door or front faces: the direction you look when you stand inside the doorway facing out. A door you walk out of towards the east is an “east-facing” entrance. Rooms are then placed by zone as seen from the centre of the home, which is how the Vastu checker asks for them.

In the sixteen-zone system north spans 348.75° to 11.25°, north-north-east 11.25° to 33.75°, and so on round the circle in 22.5° steps. In the eight-direction system north spans 337.5° to 22.5° and each direction covers 45°. Guides disagree on whether to measure from magnetic or true north; in India the difference is only about 0–2°, but it can matter right at a boundary.

Getting a reading you can trust

  • Calibrate first: move the phone slowly in a figure-of-eight until the reading is steady.
  • Steel doors, window grilles, reinforced columns, inverters and parked vehicles distort a phone compass. Take readings at two or three spots a metre apart and compare.
  • Ignore the floor plan’s printed arrow until you have checked it — plans are often drawn with “north up” only roughly.
  • Phone compasses are usually within about 5°. For a plot boundary or a reading near a zone edge, confirm with a good magnetic compass or a surveyor.
  • To work out the size of the plot itself, use the land area calculator.

Vastu Compass FAQ

How do I use a Vastu compass for my home?

Stand in the main doorway facing out, hold the phone flat with its top edge pointing ahead, start the compass and read the zone and degree. That is the direction your entrance faces. Repeat from the centre of the home to find the zone of each room.

Is this Vastu compass online free?

Yes. It works in the browser on Android phones and iPhones with no app, sign-up or payment.

Should a Vastu compass use magnetic or true north?

Most consultants read a magnetic compass directly, and some correct to true north. In most of India the two differ by under 2°, so it only matters near a zone boundary. You can switch between them here.

What are the 16 Vastu zones with degrees?

Each zone is 22.5° wide, centred on the sixteen compass points: N 348.75°–11.25°, NNE 11.25°–33.75°, NE 33.75°–56.25°, ENE, E (78.75°–101.25°) and so on to NNW. The full table is under the compass.

Is Vastu scientific?

No. Vastu is a cultural and architectural tradition. Some guidelines happen to suit the Indian climate, but there is no scientific evidence that a direction affects health, wealth or luck.

Why does my reading change between rooms?

Steel and electrical wiring in walls bend the magnetic field. Take readings away from metal and average several.
