A free time tracker for work, clients and billable hours
This time tracker is for freelancers, consultants and anyone who bills by the hour or simply wants to know where the week went. Create a project for each client with an hourly rate, press Start timer when you begin and Stop when you finish, and the hours, billable time and amount add up by day, week and month.
There is no account and no server: your projects and entries are saved in this browser. Forgot to start the timer? Add the time by hand or edit an entry later. When it is time to bill, download a timesheet as CSV or an invoice file that the invoice generator imports in one click.
How to use the Time Tracker (Projects & Billable Hours)
- Open Add a project, enter a name, the client and your hourly rate, and say whether it is billable.
- Choose the project, type what you are working on and press Start timer. Starting another project stops the first.
- Add forgotten time under Add or edit time, or press the pencil on any entry to change it.
- Switch between today, this week, this month and all time, and choose whether billable time is rounded up.
- Download the timesheet CSV, or pick a client and download the invoice file for the invoice generator.
Time Tracker (Projects & Billable Hours) features
One timer at a time
Start, stop and switch projects with one click; the timer keeps counting through reloads and sleep because it stores the start time.
Billable and non-billable
Per project and per entry, with hourly rates and amounts in dollars, euros, pounds, rupees and more.
Rounding
Round each billable entry up to 1, 6, 15 or 30 minutes — 6 minutes is the 0.1-hour unit many professionals bill in.
Daily and weekly totals
Hours per project and a Monday-to-Sunday bar chart of the current week.
Timesheet and invoice export
CSV with decimal hours for spreadsheets and payroll, and a ready invoice draft with one line per project.
How billable hours and amounts are calculated
Each entry’s duration is end time minus start time. Billable time is the sum of the entries marked billable, each rounded up to your chosen step if you pick one, and the amount is billable hours × the project’s hourly rate. Rounding applies per entry, the way most timesheets work — so ten 2-minute entries rounded to 15 minutes bill as 2.5 hours, not 20 minutes.
Example: 1 h 30 min of API work for Acme at $80/h ($120), 30 minutes on another client at $60/h ($30) and 1 h 07 min more for Acme ($89.33) make $239.33 for the week. Round each entry up to 15 minutes and the 1 h 07 min becomes 1 h 15 min, so the total is $250.00. A 45-minute internal call marked non-billable counts towards your hours but not the invoice.
Decimal hours
Invoices and payroll use decimal hours. Divide minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25 h, 20 minutes 0.33 h, 45 minutes 0.75 h, 1 h 07 min 1.12 h. The CSV has both the clock time and decimal hours; for adding up time cards by hand, use the hours calculator, and to set a rate in the first place the freelance rate calculator.
| Minutes | 6 | 15 | 20 | 30 | 45 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decimal hours | 0.1 | 0.25 | 0.33 | 0.5 | 0.75 |
Where your data lives
- Everything is stored in your browser’s local storage on this device — nothing is uploaded and nobody else can see it.
- Another browser, another device or a private window starts empty. Clearing site data erases your entries, so download the CSV as a backup.
- The tracker works offline once the page has loaded, and a timer left running keeps counting even if you close the tab.
- For a simple stopwatch with laps, use the stopwatch; for focused work blocks, the pomodoro timer.
Time Tracker (Projects & Billable Hours) FAQ
Is this time tracker free?
Yes — free, with no sign-up and no limit on projects or entries. It runs entirely in your browser.
Does the timer keep running if I close the page?
Yes. The time tracker saves the moment you pressed Start, so when you come back it shows the time since then. Press Stop to save the entry.
Can I track time for several clients?
Yes. Create a project per client or job, each with its own hourly rate. Only one timer runs at a time, so switching projects stops the previous one.
How do I turn tracked time into an invoice?
Choose the client under “Invoice for”, download the invoice file and import it in the invoice generator with Import JSON. Each project becomes a line with hours as the quantity.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide by 60: 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. The CSV export already gives decimal hours.
Can my team use it together?
Not directly — data stays in each person’s browser. Each person can export a CSV and you can combine them in a spreadsheet.
