Read PDF aloud with natural voices, right in your browser
Sometimes it is easier to listen than to read: a long report on the commute, a chapter while you cook, a contract you want to hear once before signing, or a document that strains your eyes. This tool will read a PDF aloud using the speech voices already on your phone or computer — no app to install and no account.
The text is taken from the PDF in reading order, rebuilt into paragraphs and split into sentences. Running headers, footers and page numbers are skipped, so you don’t hear “Annual Report 2025 — page 14” between every page. As it reads, the current sentence is highlighted and the page number is shown, and you can jump back or forward by a sentence, a paragraph or a page, or tap any sentence to start there.
Close the tab halfway through and come back later: the reader remembers where you stopped in each file and offers to continue from there. Your PDF stays on your device.
How to listen to a PDF
- Drop a PDF onto the upload area or click to choose it. Its text appears page by page.
- Choose a Voice — they are grouped by language — and set the Speed and Pitch.
- Press Play. The sentence being read is highlighted and the current page is shown above the text.
- Use the Sentence, Paragraph and Page buttons to skip back or forward, or tap a sentence to read from there.
- Press Pause to take a break or Stop to finish. Next time you open the same file, it offers to continue where you left off.
Read PDF Aloud features
Sentence highlighting
The sentence being spoken is highlighted and kept in view, so you can read along or glance back.
Skip by sentence, paragraph or page
Six skip buttons and tap-to-jump make it easy to re-hear a sentence or move past an appendix.
Headers and footers skipped
Lines that repeat at the top or bottom of the pages, and bare page numbers, are left out (switchable).
Voices grouped by language
Every voice your browser offers, sorted by language with your own first; online voices are labelled.
Reliable on long documents
Speech is sent one sentence at a time, with long sentences split at commas, which avoids the cut-off some browsers have after about 15 seconds.
Remembers your place
The last sentence you heard is saved in your browser for each file, for up to 30 files.
Which voices you will hear
The reader uses the Web Speech API, so the voices come from your device and browser rather than from Galaxy of Tools. On Windows, Microsoft Edge offers many natural-sounding online voices, and Chrome adds Google voices to the ones installed in Windows. On a Mac, iPhone or iPad you can download higher-quality voices in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content. On Android, voices come from the Speech Services by Google app, where more languages can be installed.
Choose a voice in the same language as the document — an English voice reading a Hindi or French PDF will mispronounce almost every word. Voices marked “online” usually sound best but need a connection and send the sentences being read to that provider; on-device voices work offline and keep everything private.
Why the audio can’t be downloaded
With the Web Speech API the browser passes text to the operating system’s speech engine, which plays it directly. Web pages never receive the audio, so no browser-only reader can save an MP3. Services that offer a download send your whole document to their servers to synthesise it. If you need a recording, play the PDF and record your computer’s system audio with another app.
Getting the best reading
- Silence or “No text on this page” means the page is a scanned image. Add a text layer with Make PDF Searchable, then open the new file here.
- Words in the wrong order can happen with complex layouts such as magazines, because the text is read in the order it was written into the file. Check it in PDF to Text.
- Want to read pasted text instead? The Text to Speech tool reads anything you type or paste, with word-by-word highlighting.
- Planning your listening time? PDF Word Count shows the number of words and the speaking time of a PDF.
Read PDF Aloud FAQ
How do I make a PDF read aloud for free?
Open the PDF on this page, choose a voice and press Play. The current sentence is highlighted as it is read. There is no sign-up, limit or watermark.
Can it read Hindi or other languages?
Yes, if your device has a voice for that language. Chrome and Edge usually include Hindi, and Android can download Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and more. Pick the voice from the matching language group.
Why does it skip headers and page numbers?
Hearing the document title and a page number at every page break is distracting, so repeated lines at the top and bottom of the pages are left out. Untick “Skip headers, footers and page numbers” to hear everything.
Will it remember where I stopped?
Yes. The position is saved in your browser for each file name and size. When you open the same PDF again, it offers to continue from that sentence.
Can I download the PDF audio as an MP3?
No. Browser speech plays directly through your speakers and web pages can’t capture it. You can record your system audio with another app while it plays.
Is my document private?
The PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded. With on-device voices nothing leaves your device; online voices send the sentences being read to their provider, and are labelled “online”.
