Make a scanned PDF searchable without changing how it looks
When you press Ctrl+F in a scanned PDF and nothing is found, the file has no text in it — every page is a photograph of paper. This tool makes that PDF searchable. It reads each page with OCR and lays the recognised words, invisibly, exactly over the places where they appear in the image.
Your pages are not re-rendered, compressed or converted: the original scan, its quality, links and bookmarks stay as they were, and only a hidden text layer is added. The result opens in any PDF reader, where you can search, highlight and copy text, and it becomes findable by the search in Windows, macOS, Google Drive and most document-management systems.
Everything runs on your device. The OCR engine works in 30 languages, from English, Spanish and German to Hindi, Tamil, Arabic and Chinese, and pages that already contain text are left alone.
How to make a PDF searchable
- Drop the scanned PDF onto the upload area, or click it to choose the file.
- Choose the Document language and, for bilingual pages, a Second language.
- Leave Skip pages that already have selectable text ticked so typed pages are not processed twice. Limit Pages to process if you only need part of a long file.
- Press Make PDF searchable and wait while each page is read.
- Type a word into Test the new text layer to confirm it is found, then press Download searchable PDF.
Make PDF Searchable features
Pages kept exactly as they are
The original page content is reused unchanged; nothing is rasterised or re-compressed, so print quality and file size stay close to the original.
Invisible text in the right place
Every word is positioned over its image and stretched to the word’s width, so highlights and selections line up with what you see — on rotated pages too.
Any script
The hidden layer uses a Unicode-mapped invisible font, so Devanagari, Tamil, Arabic, Cyrillic and Chinese text is searchable and copies out correctly.
Built-in check
Search the finished file before downloading; the check reads the new text layer exactly as a PDF reader does and lists the pages with matches.
Skips what is already searchable
Pages with real text are detected and left untouched, so nothing is duplicated.
No upload
Scans of IDs, contracts and medical records stay on your device the whole time.
What a searchable PDF actually is
A searchable PDF, sometimes called a “PDF sandwich”, has two layers on each scanned page: the picture you see, and underneath it a layer of text drawn in invisible ink. PDF readers ignore the invisible layer when displaying the page but use it when you search, select or copy. Screen readers can use it too, which makes scanned documents far more accessible, although a fully accessible PDF also needs tags and reading order that OCR alone does not create.
Because the visible page is untouched, any OCR mistakes stay hidden: a misread word simply will not be found by a search. That is why the tool shows the recognised text and lets you test a few search terms before you download.
Searchable PDF or plain text?
| You want to… | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Keep the document looking like the original, but search and copy from it | Make PDF Searchable (this page) |
| Paste the content into an email, document or spreadsheet | PDF OCR — returns editable text |
| Read text from a PDF that is already digital | PDF to Text — instant and exact |
| Capture paper documents with a phone camera | Scan to PDF, then make the result searchable here |
Tips and limits
- Pages must be upright for good recognition; straighten sideways scans with Rotate PDF first.
- The text layer adds only a few kilobytes per page. If the scan itself is large, shrink it afterwards with Compress PDF — the hidden text is kept.
- Encrypted PDFs cannot be modified. Remove the protection first by printing the file to a new PDF.
- Handwriting, stamps and signatures are generally not recognised, so they will not become searchable.
- The tool adds text only; it does not create a PDF/A archive file or remove existing invisible text from an earlier OCR run.
Make PDF Searchable FAQ
How do I make a scanned PDF searchable for free?
Open the PDF here, choose its language and press “Make PDF searchable”. When OCR finishes, download the new file and use Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) in any PDF reader. It is free, with no sign-up or watermark.
Will my PDF look different after OCR?
No. The visible pages are copied unchanged; only invisible text is added on top. Printouts and on-screen appearance are identical to the original.
Does making a PDF searchable increase the file size?
Only slightly. The hidden text and a tiny embedded font usually add a few kilobytes per page, far less than re-saving the scans as images would.
Can I search Hindi or other non-English scans?
Yes. Choose the matching language before you start. The text layer stores real Unicode characters, so searching and copying Hindi, Tamil, Arabic or Chinese works in readers that support those scripts.
Why can’t I find a word I can see on the page?
OCR may have misread it, often because of a blurred scan, a stamp over the text or the wrong language. Check the recognised text, try a higher resolution, or search for a nearby word.
Is it safe to make confidential documents searchable here?
Yes. The PDF is read, recognised and rebuilt inside your browser. It is never uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the page.
