Pro rata salary calculator for part-time, term-time and part-month pay
A pro rata salary is a full-time salary scaled to the share of full-time work you actually do. If a full-time job pays £30,000 for 37.5 hours a week and you work 22.5 hours, you are paid 22.5 ÷ 37.5 = 60% of it: £18,000. That is what pro rata salary meaning boils down to — the same rate per hour, for fewer hours.
This pro rata salary calculator handles the cases people ask about most: part-time hours or days (UK, Australia, anywhere), term-time and other part-year contracts where only some weeks are paid, and India’s part-month salary for joiners, leavers and unpaid leave, where the monthly salary is divided by 30, 26, the calendar days or the working days in the month. It shows the yearly, monthly, weekly and hourly figures, the FTE, and the working, so you can check an offer letter or a payslip.

Pro rata formulas with worked examples
Part-time: pro rata salary = full-time salary × your hours ÷ full-time hours. £30,000 × 22.5 ÷ 37.5 = £18,000 a year, £1,500 a month. In Australia, where full time is usually 38 hours under the National Employment Standards, A$90,000 × 30 ÷ 38 = A$71,052.63.
Term-time: pro rata salary = full-time salary × (your hours ÷ full-time hours) × (weeks worked + paid holiday weeks) ÷ weeks in a year. A school post at £30,000 full time, 32.5 of 37 hours, 39 term weeks plus 5.6 weeks of holiday: £30,000 × 0.8784 × 44.6 ÷ 52 = £22,601.35, usually paid as twelve equal monthly instalments. UK councils often publish a “paid weeks” figure and a 52.143-week year for each post — use theirs when you have it.
India part month: one day = monthly salary ÷ divisor; salary after unpaid leave = monthly − one day × LOP days. On ₹30,000 in October 2026 with 2 days of loss of pay, the 30-day method gives ₹28,000, the calendar method (÷ 31) ₹28,064.52 and the 26-day method ₹27,692.31. A joiner on 21 October paid for 11 calendar days gets 30,000 × 11 ÷ 31 = ₹10,645.16.
Which method is right?
- UK and Australia: pro rata by contracted hours is standard; the employer’s pay policy decides the weeks-in-a-year figure.
- India: the divisor is company policy. Some states fix it for minimum wages — Haryana and Punjab’s 2026 notifications use monthly ÷ 26 for the daily wage and ÷ 30 for absence deductions. See the minimum wage finder.
- Holiday is pro rata too: use the holiday entitlement calculator for part-time leave in the UK.
- To turn pay between hourly, monthly and yearly without pro rating, use the salary calculator; for UK take-home pay after tax, the UK take-home pay calculator.
Pro Rata Salary Calculator FAQ
What does pro rata salary mean?
It is a full-time salary paid in proportion to the time you work. Working 3 days of a 5-day week pro rata means 60% of the full-time salary, at the same daily rate.
How do I calculate pro rata salary in the UK?
Divide your contracted hours by the full-time hours and multiply by the full-time salary: 22.5 ÷ 37.5 × £30,000 = £18,000. The pro rata salary calculator does this and shows the monthly and hourly pay.
How is term-time pay calculated?
Multiply the full-time salary by your hours ÷ full-time hours and by your paid weeks (weeks worked + paid holiday) ÷ 52 or 52.143. It is then usually spread over 12 months.
How is salary per day calculated in India, 26 or 30 days?
Either, depending on company policy: monthly ÷ 30, ÷ 26 (working days excluding Sundays), ÷ calendar days or ÷ actual working days. The tool shows all four so you can see the difference.
What is FTE?
Full-time equivalent: your hours as a share of full-time hours. 22.5 of 37.5 hours is 0.6 FTE.
Is pro rata pay before or after tax?
Before. Pro rata applies to gross pay; tax and other deductions are then worked out on the lower pay.
