Overtime calculator for time and a half, double time and statutory overtime

This overtime calculator turns your pay and extra hours into money: overtime pay, total gross pay, the overtime hourly rate and your effective hourly rate across all the hours you worked. Start from an hourly rate or a salary, then pick the overtime rule that applies to you.

Presets cover the US federal FLSA rule (1.5× over 40 hours a week), California’s daily and seventh-day rules with double time, India’s twice-the-ordinary-rate overtime under the Factories Act and the new OSH Code, and the UK, where overtime pay depends on your contract but average pay must stay above the minimum wage. Every number stays editable for union agreements or a 1.25× weekend rate.

Type your overtime hours, or switch to Day by day and the calculator applies the daily, weekly and seventh-day limits for you. To total clock-in and clock-out times with breaks, use the hours calculator first. Results are estimates of gross pay, not legal or tax advice.

Worked examples

  • US, time and a half: $20 an hour, 50 hours in the week. 40 × $20 = $800 regular pay; 10 × $30 = $300 overtime; gross $1,100, an effective $22 an hour. A $52,000 salary covering 40 hours works out to $25 an hour, so its overtime rate is $37.50.
  • California: 10, 13, 8, 8 and 8 hours from Monday to Friday at $20. Monday has 2 overtime hours; Tuesday has 4 at 1.5× and 1 at 2×. Total 40 regular, 6 overtime and 1 double-time hour: $220 of overtime pay.
  • California seventh day: 8 hours on each of 7 days gives 16 overtime hours — Saturday passes the weekly 40 and Sunday is the seventh day: $480 extra at $20.
  • India: basic + DA of ₹26,000 a month ÷ 26 ÷ 8 = ₹125 an hour. Six 10-hour days is 60 hours: only 6 hours exceed 9 a day, but 12 exceed 48 a week, so the more favourable 12 hours are paid at ₹250 — ₹3,000.
  • UK, unpaid overtime: £14 an hour for 40 contracted hours plus 10 unpaid hours averages £11.20 an hour — below the £12.71 National Living Wage, which is not allowed.

What counts as the regular rate

In the US the regular rate includes non-discretionary bonuses, so a bonus can raise your overtime rate. In India the Factories Act uses basic wages plus allowances such as DA; the Labour Codes use basic pay, DA and retaining allowance. Convert annual pay with the salary calculator, and measure odd shift lengths with the time duration calculator.

Overtime Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your overtime hours by your hourly rate and by the overtime multiplier. At $18 an hour and time and a half, 6 overtime hours pay 6 × $27 = $162. The overtime calculator does this and adds regular pay, double time and daily or weekly limits.

What does time and a half mean?

It means 1.5 times your normal hourly rate for each overtime hour. Double time means 2 times. A $20 rate becomes $30 at time and a half and $40 at double time.

Is US overtime calculated per day or per week?

Federal law (FLSA) uses the workweek: hours over 40 are overtime, however they fall across the days. A few states, most notably California, also have daily overtime and double time.

How is overtime calculated in India?

At twice the ordinary rate of wages for work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week under the Factories Act, or beyond the normal day and 48-hour week under the OSH Code — daily or weekly, whichever gives the worker more. The hourly rate is usually (basic + DA) ÷ 26 days ÷ 8 hours.

Does my UK employer have to pay overtime?

No law requires a premium or even payment for overtime; your contract decides. But your average pay for all hours worked must not fall below the National Minimum Wage, and you can refuse to average more than 48 hours a week unless you opted out.

Is overtime pay taxed differently?

It is taxed as normal income. In the US, a federal deduction for qualified overtime (the premium half of time and a half, up to $12,500 a year) applies for 2025–2028, subject to income limits.
