Get medical help urgently if you might be pregnant and have:

  • tummy pain low down on one side, pain in the tip of your shoulder, or vaginal bleeding or brown watery discharge — contact your GP, doctor or NHS 111 even before a positive test
  • sudden, sharp, intense tummy pain with feeling very dizzy, fainting or looking very pale — call an ambulance (possible ectopic pregnancy, NHS)

General information for parents, not medical advice — ask your paediatrician / midwife, and seek urgent care for warning signs. A positive test is almost always right: contact a midwife, GP or doctor to start pregnancy care. A negative test can be too early — test again in a few days, and see a doctor if your period still has not come.

An implantation calculator that tells you when to test

After ovulation, a fertilised egg takes several days to travel to the womb and attach to its lining — implantation. Only then does the pregnancy hormone hCG start to appear, and only a few days later is there enough for a home test to pick up. That is why testing too early so often gives a negative result that later turns positive.

This implantation calculator works from the first day of your last period, from your ovulation day, or — if your periods are irregular — from the date of unprotected sex. It shows the implantation window, the earliest day an early-result test might show, the day your period is due, and the window when a test is most reliable, each with how many days away it is. It is information only, not medical advice, and it cannot tell you whether you are pregnant.

How to use the Implantation Calculator

  1. Choose what you know: your last period, your ovulation day (from ovulation strips or temperature charting), or only the date of unprotected sex.
  2. Enter the date. For the last-period option, enter your usual cycle length; change the luteal phase only if you know yours.
  3. Read the implantation window and the test dates in the table; today is outlined on the day-by-day strip.
  4. Press Copy dates to save them in a note or calendar.

Three starting points

Last period with cycle length, a known ovulation day, or the date of sex for irregular periods.

Implantation window

6–12 days after ovulation, with the most likely days 8–10 highlighted.

Test dates

The earliest an early-result test might work, the day your period is due, and the most reliable window 1–2 weeks later.

Days past ovulation

Shows today as “DPO”, the way many people track the two-week wait.

When does implantation happen?

In a well-known study of 221 women who collected daily urine samples, hCG first appeared 6 to 12 days after ovulation in pregnancies that continued, and in 84% of them on day 8, 9 or 10 (Wilcox and colleagues, New England Journal of Medicine, 1999). Later implantation was linked with a higher chance of early loss. Some people notice light spotting around implantation; many notice nothing at all, and spotting alone does not confirm a pregnancy.

When to take a pregnancy test

  • From the day your period is due — most home tests are designed for this day (NHS).
  • Earlier — some sensitive early-result tests can pick up hCG a few days before a missed period, but many pregnancies are not detectable yet. The calculator’s “earliest” line, about 10 days after ovulation, is a rule of thumb, not a promise.
  • Most reliable — the US Food and Drug Administration advises testing 1–2 weeks after a missed period; it notes that 10 to 20 in every 100 pregnant women will not get a positive result on the first day of a missed period.
  • Even with a very sensitive laboratory test, about 10% of pregnancies had not implanted by the first day of the missed period (Wilcox and colleagues, JAMA, 2001).
  • Irregular periods or unsure? The NHS advises testing at least 21 days after unprotected sex.

How the dates are worked out

From your last period, ovulation is estimated as the cycle length minus the luteal phase (14 days by default) — day 14 of a 28-day cycle. Your period is due one luteal phase after ovulation. The due date shown is 266 days after ovulation, the same rule the pregnancy due date calculator uses for a conception date. For the date-of-sex option, conception is possible up to 5 days later, because sperm can survive that long (Wilcox and colleagues, 1995).

If you are trying to conceive, the ovulation calculator predicts your fertile days, and the hCG calculator works out doubling time from blood test results.

Implantation Calculator FAQ

How many days after ovulation does implantation occur?

Usually 8 to 10 days, and almost always between 6 and 12 days, based on daily hormone measurements in the Wilcox study.

How soon after implantation can I test?

hCG starts at implantation but takes a few days to reach the level home tests detect. Most tests are designed for the day your period is due; testing 1–2 weeks after a missed period gives the most reliable result.

Can I use this implantation calculator with irregular periods?

Yes. Choose “My ovulation day” if you use ovulation tests or temperature charting, or “Only the date of unprotected sex” — then test at least 21 days after that date.

I got a negative test but my period has not come. What now?

You may have tested too early. Wait a few days and test again, ideally with first-morning urine. If it is still negative and your period has not come, speak to a GP or doctor.

Is implantation bleeding a sign of pregnancy?

Some people have light spotting around the time of implantation, but it is not a reliable sign, and many have none. A pregnancy test after a missed period is the way to find out.

Does this calculator tell me if I am pregnant?

No. It estimates dates only. If your test is positive, contact a midwife, GP or doctor to start pregnancy care.
