Convert EPUB to MOBI for Kindle e-readers
The EPUB to MOBI converter writes a classic Kindle MOBI file (Mobipocket 6, also called KF7) from any DRM-free EPUB. Chapters are separated by Kindle page breaks, the book gets a linked table of contents and a “Go to” guide, pictures are resized to the Kindle’s image limit, and the cover and metadata go into the file header.
Be aware that MOBI is a legacy format. Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB files directly and no longer accepts MOBI, so if your Kindle is recent, send it the EPUB instead. A MOBI file is still the right choice for first-generation to Kindle Keyboard devices, sideloading by USB on older models, Kindle for PC 1.x, Mobipocket Reader and apps that only understand MOBI.
Conversion happens entirely in your browser, and every MOBI is read back with an independent parser before you save it.
How to convert EPUB to MOBI
- Drop an
.epubfile onto the upload area or click to choose one. - Check the Title and Author(s) — they appear in the Kindle library.
- Choose the Image size limit and whether to add the linked table of contents and images.
- Press Create MOBI. The file downloads after its read-back check; copy it to the Kindle’s
documentsfolder over USB.
EPUB to MOBI Converter features
A real MOBI 6 writer
Text is split into 4,096-byte records compressed with PalmDOC LZ77, with Mobipocket and EXTH headers, FLIS/FCIS records and multibyte-safe record boundaries — the layout the Kindle firmware expects.
Formatting the Kindle understands
Each chapter is laid out with the book’s own CSS, then bold, italics, underlines, small caps, font sizes, alignment, indents and spacing are written as the HTML attributes MOBI readers use.
Working navigation
The table of contents at the start and every internal link use Kindle “filepos” byte offsets, and guide entries make Go to → Table of Contents and Go to → Beginning work.
Images within Kindle limits
Pictures are converted to baseline JPEG (GIFs are kept) and shrunk until each is under 127 KB; SVG illustrations are rasterised.
Cover and metadata
Title, authors, language, publisher, description and subjects go into the EXTH header, with the cover image and a thumbnail for the Kindle home screen.
Checked before download
The finished file is reopened with the open-source @lingo-reader/mobi-parser, and its sections, title, cover and contents are reported.
EPUB, MOBI, AZW3 and KFX — which does your Kindle need?
| Device or app | Best format |
|---|---|
| Kindle Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, Basic (recent firmware), Kindle apps | EPUB via Send to Kindle (email, app or website) |
| Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 2/DX, Kindle 4/5 and Touch, by USB | MOBI from this tool |
| Kindle for PC 1.x, Mobipocket Reader, some phone readers | MOBI |
| Kobo, PocketBook, Apple Books, Google Play Books | EPUB — no conversion needed |
What MOBI cannot do
- MOBI 6 does not support CSS, so complex layouts (floats, colours, custom fonts, multi-column pages) are simplified to what old Kindles can show. Text, headings, emphasis, lists, simple tables and images are kept.
- Kindle chapter-to-chapter skipping on very old models uses an NCX index, which this tool does not write; the table of contents page and the Go to menu work instead.
- DRM-protected EPUBs (Adobe, Apple, Kobo) cannot be converted. Need it the other way round? Use MOBI to EPUB.
- For printing, EPUB to PDF keeps the book’s design; for plain text, try EPUB to TXT.
EPUB to MOBI Converter FAQ
How do I convert EPUB to MOBI?
Open the EPUB on this page, check the title and author, and press “Create MOBI”. The EPUB to MOBI conversion runs in your browser and the .mobi file downloads when it has been checked.
Do I still need MOBI for my Kindle?
Usually not. Since 2022 Amazon’s Send to Kindle accepts EPUB and converts it for every current Kindle and Kindle app, while MOBI is no longer accepted there. MOBI is useful for older Kindles loaded over USB and for MOBI-only apps.
How do I put the MOBI file on my Kindle?
Connect the Kindle to your computer with a USB cable, open it like a drive and copy the .mobi file into the “documents” folder. Eject the Kindle and the book appears in the library.
Will my book’s formatting survive?
Headings, bold, italics, underlines, small caps, alignment, indents, lists, simple tables and images are kept. MOBI 6 has no CSS, so fonts, colours and complex layouts are simplified.
Why are my images smaller?
Kindle MOBI files allow at most about 127 KB per image, so larger pictures are re-compressed and, if needed, scaled down. Choose the 63 KB option for very old Mobipocket readers.
Is my EPUB uploaded?
No. The EPUB is unzipped, laid out and converted in your browser, and the MOBI is assembled on your device.
