Urdu typing from Roman Urdu
This Urdu typing tool turns Roman Urdu, the way Urdu is texted in English letters, into Urdu script as you type: write aap kaise hain? and get آپ کیسے ہیں؟. Use it for English to Urdu typing on any computer or phone without an Urdu keyboard: messages, posts, poetry, letters and school work.
Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script, right to left, so it cannot reuse an Indic keyboard. Inside a word the short vowels a, i and u are normally not written at all (kitab کتاب, dil دل), long vowels are written with ا, و and ی, a final e sound takes ے, and a nasal n at the end of a word is ں. This keyboard follows those rules and a table of about 150 everyday words.
It changes the script, not the language: English words are spelled in Urdu letters, not translated.
How to use the Urdu Typing
- Type Roman Urdu in the left box. The Urdu text appears on the right, right to left, as you type.
- When a sound has several Urdu letters (س ص ث, ز ذ ض ظ, ت ط, ہ ح, خ کھ, گھ غ), click the right word in the strip under the box.
- Use the Urdu letters palette for ع, ء, ئ, ۂ, harakat (zer, zabar, pesh, shadda) and ﷺ.
- Choose Type in place to have each word turn into Urdu in the same box when you press space.
- Press Copy Urdu or Download .txt. The text is Unicode and shows in any Urdu or Arabic font; with Noto Nastaliq Urdu or Jameel Noori Nastaleeq installed it appears in nastaliq.
Urdu Typing features
Short vowels left unwritten
a, i and u inside a word are dropped as Urdu spelling does, while aa, ee, oo, o, e and ai become ا, ی, و and ے: mera میرا, kaise کیسے, hoon ہوں.
Word start and word end
A word that begins with a vowel gets an alif (ek ایک, aap آپ), a final a becomes ا, a final e or ai becomes ے, and a final n after a long vowel becomes ں (main میں, hain ہیں).
Hamza and silent h
A vowel after another vowel takes ئ (hue ہوئے, hui ہوئی), and eh/oh before h is read as short (pehla پہلا, woh وہ).
Urdu punctuation and digits
? , . ; become ؟ ، ۔ ؛, and an option writes ۱۲۳ for 123.

How Roman Urdu becomes Urdu
Each group of English letters is matched against the Urdu table, longest first: bh بھ, ph پھ, th تھ, Th ٹھ, ch چ, chh چھ, sh ش, zh ژ, q ق, R ڑ. Then every vowel is written according to where it stands in the word: at the start with an alif, inside the word only if it is long, and at the end with ا, ی, و or ے. A doubled consonant is written once, as Urdu normally does without a shadda.
Roman Urdu has no fixed spelling and Urdu has several letters for one sound, so no set of rules can be right every time: khana may be کھانا (food) or خانہ (house). Common words come from the table; for the rest, the suggestion strip shows the other letters.

Limits worth knowing
- Words of Arabic origin often start with ع (ilm علم, ishq عشق); the table covers common ones, otherwise pick ع from the suggestions or palette.
- Harakat (zer, zabar, pesh) are not added automatically; add them from the palette when you need full vocalisation.
- Old InPage files are not Unicode; this page types new Unicode Urdu and does not convert InPage text.
- For Hindi in Devanagari use Hindi typing; for meaning rather than script, the translation tool.
Urdu Typing FAQ
How do I type Urdu using an English keyboard?
Type Roman Urdu as you would text it, for example main theek hoon, and the tool writes میں ٹھیک ہوں. Click a suggestion when a word uses a different letter.
Is this a Roman Urdu to Urdu converter?
Yes. Paste a whole Roman Urdu paragraph into the box and the Urdu appears on the right; copy or download it.
How do I type ں, ے, ٹ and ڑ?
They come from the rules (final n after a long vowel = ں, final e = ے) or from capitals inside a word: T ٹ, D ڈ, R ڑ. They are also in the palette.
Why is my text not in nastaliq style?
The result is Unicode Urdu; how it looks depends on your fonts. Phones usually show nastaliq; on a computer install a nastaliq font or paste into an app that has one.
Does it translate English to Urdu?
No. It changes the letters, not the language. Use a translator for meaning.
Is my text private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
