Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

A square video maker for landscape and portrait clips

Square video is the safe middle ground of social media. A 1:1 clip takes more room in a scrolling feed than a widescreen one, fits almost every placement without being cut down, and works for feed posts, YouTube Shorts and square ad slots alike. This square video maker turns any landscape or portrait video into a 1080 × 1080 MP4 in a few clicks.

You decide what happens to the part that doesn’t fit. Keep the full picture on a blurred copy of itself or on a colour, or crop to a square that can glide across the frame with keyframes. All of the work happens in your browser using Mediabunny (an MPL-2.0 media library, loaded unmodified from jsDelivr) and the WebCodecs encoder built into your browser — nothing is uploaded.

How to make a video square

  1. Drop a video on the upload area; landscape, portrait and already-square clips are all fine.
  2. Keep “1:1 · 1080 × 1080”, or choose 720 × 720 for a lighter file.
  3. Pick the fill: Blurred video (top and bottom or left and right, depending on the shape), Colour, or Nothing — crop.
  4. When cropping, drag the preview to choose the square; tick the keyframe option to move it during the clip.
  5. Press “Make square video”, check the result, then press “Download MP4”.

Square Video Maker features

Works both ways

Wide clips get filled above and below; tall clips get filled left and right. The tool works out which automatically.

Square crop that moves

Set keyframes and the 1:1 window pans smoothly between them, so a subject who crosses the frame stays in shot.

Blur or brand colours

A blurred backdrop with adjustable strength and darkness, a single colour, or a two-colour gradient.

Size and length checks

The finished MP4 is read back so you see its real pixel size, length, codecs and file size beside the original’s.

Private by design

Your video stays in the browser tab from start to finish — no account, no watermark, no upload.

How much of the frame does a square keep?

A 16:9 crop keeps a little over half of the picture, so wide group shots usually look better fitted on a blurred background, while a single speaker survives a crop easily. Zoom gives you anything in between.

Where square video works well

  • Feed posts. On a phone, a square clip fills the full screen width and stands about 1.8 times as tall as a 16:9 clip of the same width.
  • YouTube Shorts. YouTube’s help centre says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long with a square or vertical aspect ratio, so a square clip uploads as a Short.
  • Ads. TikTok’s Ads Help Center (updated July 2025) accepts 1:1 video of at least 640 × 640 pixels, which the 640 preset matches.
  • Messaging and websites. A square clip previews neatly in chats, product grids and email, where 9:16 looks cramped and 16:9 looks small.

Getting a clean square result

Keep titles and logos away from the very edges: some apps round the corners of video tiles or place a mute button over a corner. If you need a GIF rather than a video, make the square first and then use video to GIF.

For platform presets with length limits and safe-zone guides, the Instagram video resizer and Shorts resizer include the square option too. Other shapes are a click away in the vertical and horizontal video makers.

Square Video Maker FAQ

How do I make a video square without cropping it?

Choose “Blurred video” or “Colour” as the fill. The whole picture is scaled to fit inside the square and the empty space is filled, so nothing is cut off.

What size is a square video?

1080 × 1080 pixels is the usual 1:1 size. This square video maker also offers 720 × 720 and 640 × 640 for smaller files.

Can I choose which part of the video stays when cropping?

Yes. With “Nothing — crop” selected, drag the preview or use the arrow keys. To follow movement, turn on keyframes and set the position at a few moments.

Will my video be stretched?

Never. Every mode keeps the original proportions; only the frame around the picture changes.

Is there a length or file-size limit?

There is no fixed limit here, but the whole result is held in your browser’s memory, so very long or high-bitrate videos need a device with plenty of RAM. Trim long clips first with the video cutter.

Is it free and private?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and the video is processed on your device rather than uploaded.
