Create clean, readable URL slugs from any title
A slug is the part of a web address that identifies a page in plain words — /blog/how-to-make-creme-brulee/ rather than /post.php?id=4821. The URL Slug Generator turns a headline, product name or heading into that form: lowercase, words joined by hyphens, accents and foreign letters converted to plain Latin, punctuation removed and an optional maximum length applied at a word boundary.
It handles the awkward cases that break simple “replace spaces with dashes” scripts: Crème Brûlée becomes creme-brulee, German Straße becomes strasse, Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated, & becomes and, and apostrophes vanish so don’t becomes dont. Paste many titles at once for bulk slugs and download them as CSV. Everything runs locally in your browser.
How to use the URL Slug Generator
- Type or paste the title. For many titles, put one per line.
- Choose a separator (hyphens are what Google recommends), a max length and whether to keep the original letter case.
- Tick Remove English stop words to drop filler like “the”, “of” and “to”, and decide whether to keep numbers.
- Add a prefix such as
/blog/if you want the full path. - Press Copy slug, or Download list when you converted several titles.
URL Slug Generator features
Real transliteration
Unicode decomposition strips accents from any Latin letter; tables handle ß→ss, æ→ae, ø→o, ł→l, Cyrillic (Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian) and Greek.
Stop-word removal
Optionally removes about 90 common English function words, but never empties a slug that is made only of them.
Smart length limit
Cuts at the last separator before the limit so you never end on half a word.
Symbols with meaning
& → and, % → percent, + → plus, € → euro, ₹ → inr, so “Tea & Coffee” reads naturally as tea-and-coffee.
Bulk mode with CSV
Convert a whole content calendar at once and download title/slug pairs; duplicate slugs are flagged.
Live and private
Results update as you type; nothing is sent anywhere.
What makes a good URL slug
Google’s guidance is to use simple, descriptive words in URLs, separate them with hyphens rather than underscores, keep them in lowercase and avoid long ID strings. Readable slugs help people judge a link before clicking and are easier to share. Search engines do read the words, but the effect on rankings is small — treat a good slug as part of a clear page rather than a keyword lever.
Keep slugs short: three to six meaningful words is plenty. Leave out dates unless the page is genuinely time-bound, and never change a slug on a published page without a 301 redirect — the .htaccess Redirect Generator can write one.

Hyphens or underscores?
Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, so red-shoes is read as “red shoes”, while red_shoes has historically been read as one token. Underscores remain an option here for systems that need them (some file names or legacy CMSs), and “none” joins words for identifiers. Spaces are never allowed in a slug — browsers would encode them as %20.
Non-Latin scripts and transliteration
Browsers can display Unicode in URLs, so a slug in Hindi, Arabic, Chinese or Japanese is valid and can be the right choice for an audience that reads that script. The address bar shows it as typed, but when copied the URL becomes percent-encoded and very long. This generator transliterates Latin-based letters, Cyrillic and Greek to ASCII, and leaves other scripts untouched with a note, so you can decide. If you prefer encoded output, run the result through the URL Encoder.
URL Slug Generator FAQ
What is a URL slug?
The human-readable last part of a URL that identifies a page, such as “how-to-tie-a-tie” in example.com/guides/how-to-tie-a-tie/. A slug generator turns a title into this format automatically.
Are slugs case-sensitive?
The path part of a URL is technically case-sensitive on most servers, so /About and /about can be different pages. Lowercase slugs avoid duplicate-content and broken-link problems, which is why lowercase is the default here.
Should I remove stop words from slugs?
It is optional. Removing “the”, “a” and “of” makes slugs shorter without changing meaning in most cases, but keep them when they matter: “to-be-or-not-to-be” would otherwise become empty, so the tool keeps the original words whenever every word is a stop word.
How does it handle accents like é or ñ?
Letters are decomposed with Unicode NFKD and the accent marks are removed, so é becomes e and ñ becomes n. Letters with no plain base, such as ß, æ, ø and ł, use a lookup table (ss, ae, o, l).
Can I generate slugs for many titles at once?
Yes. Paste one title per line and every line becomes a slug. Use “Download list” to save a CSV with the original titles and the slugs, and look for the duplicate warning.
Does changing a slug affect SEO?
Changing the URL of an existing page without a redirect loses its links and rankings. Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new slug whenever you rename a published page.
