Rotate, straighten and flip images in your browser

A photo that opens sideways, a scanned page that is upside down, a horizon that leans by two degrees, a selfie where the writing on your T-shirt reads backwards — all of these are fixed by rotating or flipping. The Rotate & Flip Image tool turns a picture by 90°, 180° or any angle, mirrors it horizontally or vertically, and shows the result live before you download.

Right-angle rotations are lossless in terms of pixels: every pixel is moved, none are blended. For custom angles you decide what happens to the corners — expand the canvas so nothing is cut off, crop to a clean rectangle, or keep the original size. The image never leaves your device, which makes the tool safe for documents and private photos.

How to use the Rotate & Flip Image

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or BMP image on the upload area, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
  2. Press Left 90°, Right 90° or 180° for quick turns, or Flip horizontal / Flip vertical to mirror the picture.
  3. For a custom angle, drag the angle slider or type an exact value — positive numbers turn clockwise.
  4. Choose how the canvas handles custom angles and whether empty corners are transparent or a solid colour.
  5. Check the output size in the badge, pick a format under “Save as” and press Download image.

Rotate & Flip Image features

Any angle, live preview

Quick 90° and 180° buttons plus a slider and number box for precise angles in 0.1° steps, with the preview updating as you drag.

Mirror both ways

Flip horizontally to correct mirrored selfies or vertically for reflections — and combine flips with rotation.

Three canvas modes

Expand to fit, crop to fill with no empty corners — ideal for straightening — or keep the original dimensions.

Transparent or coloured corners

Leave the corners transparent in PNG or WebP, or fill them with any colour, which JPG requires.

Pixel-exact right angles

Rotations by multiples of 90° use an exact transform, so no pixels are resampled or softened.

Full resolution, no upload

The preview uses a light copy for speed, but the download is rendered from your original image, in your browser.

Why do photos show up sideways?

Phone cameras usually store the picture in the sensor’s landscape orientation and add an EXIF Orientation tag that tells software how to display it. Modern browsers, phones and this tool respect that tag, but some older programs, email clients and upload forms ignore it, so the photo appears rotated there.

Rotating here and downloading writes the pixels in the correct orientation and drops the old tag, so the image looks the same everywhere. You can inspect a photo’s Orientation tag and other metadata with the EXIF viewer.

Expand, crop or keep: choosing a canvas mode

Turning a rectangle by an angle that is not a multiple of 90° makes it poke out at the corners. Expand to fit grows the canvas so the whole picture is kept; a 6000 × 4000 photo turned 10° becomes about 6,600 × 4,980 pixels, with triangles of empty space in the corners. Crop to fill cuts the largest rectangle of the original shape from the middle, which is the classic way to straighten a crooked horizon without any blank areas. Keep original size leaves the dimensions alone, so both corners and edges are affected.

  • Straightening a landscape or a building: use a small angle with Crop to fill.
  • Rotating a logo or a sticker for a design: use Expand to fit with transparent corners and save as PNG.
  • Preparing an image for a fixed-size slot: use Keep original size with a background colour.

Flip vs rotate 180°

A vertical flip and a 180° rotation can look similar but are not the same. Rotating 180° turns the picture upside down while text still reads correctly when you turn your head; a vertical flip produces a mirror image, so text becomes unreadable. Flip horizontal plus flip vertical together equals a 180° rotation.

Need to crop after straightening? Use Crop Image. Rotating pages of a document instead of a picture? The Rotate PDF tool turns PDF pages without converting them to images.

Rotate & Flip Image FAQ

How do I rotate an image 90 degrees?

Load the image and press “Right 90°” to rotate clockwise or “Left 90°” to rotate anticlockwise, then press “Download image”. Right-angle rotations move pixels exactly without blurring them.

How do I mirror or flip an image?

Press “Flip horizontal” to swap left and right — the usual fix for mirrored selfies — or “Flip vertical” to turn it upside down as a reflection. The buttons light up while active and can be combined with any rotation.

How can I straighten a tilted photo?

Drag the angle slider by a degree or two until the horizon is level, then set “Canvas for custom angles” to “Crop to fill”. You get a straight photo with no empty corners.

Why are the corners transparent or white?

A picture turned by a custom angle no longer fills a rectangle. With “Expand to fit” the gaps are transparent in PNG and WebP, or filled with your chosen colour. JPG cannot store transparency, so its corners are always filled.

Does rotating reduce image quality?

Rotations by 90°, 180° and 270° do not resample pixels at all. Custom angles need interpolation, which slightly softens fine detail, as in any photo editor. Saving as PNG avoids additional compression.

Is it safe to rotate private photos here?

Yes. This image rotator runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your files. The downloaded copy also has no EXIF data such as GPS location.
