Convert running pace between kilometres, miles and speed
This pace converter changes one running measure into all the others at once. Enter a pace in minutes per kilometre or per mile, a speed in km/h, mph or metres per second, or a 400 m lap time, and read every equivalent: 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile, 12 km/h, 7.46 mph and 2:00 per 400 m lap.
Runners meet these units constantly. UK and Indian races mark kilometres, American events use miles, watches switch between min/km and min/mile, treadmills show km/h or mph, and track sessions are set in lap times. A chart of common paces from 3:30 to 8:00 per km follows the result, with 5K and 10K finish times.
How to use the Pace Converter
- Choose what you have in I have: a pace, a speed or a lap time.
- Type the value. Paces need minutes:seconds, like 5:30; speeds are plain numbers.
- Read the pace per km and per mile, speed in km/h, mph and m/s, and the 400 m lap time.
- Use the chart below for quick look-ups and finish times at 5K and 10K.
Pace Converter features
Six units at once
Min/km, min/mile, km/h, mph, m/s and 400 m lap time update together.
Exact mile
Uses 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly, so the conversions do not drift.
Pace chart
Nineteen paces from 3:30 to 8:00 per km with their mile pace, speed and 5K and 10K times.
Clear errors
A pace typed as a plain number is rejected rather than guessed, since 5.5 could mean 5:30 or 5:50.
The conversion formulas
Speed in km/h is 3,600 ÷ pace in seconds per km. A 5:00 pace is 300 seconds, so the speed is 3,600 ÷ 300 = 12 km/h. To move between kilometre and mile paces, multiply min/km by 1.609344 to get min/mile, or divide min/mile by 1.609344 to get min/km. For speed, mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344, and m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6.
The lap time over 400 m is the pace per km × 0.4. At 5:00 per km that is 120 seconds, or 2:00 for a lap.
| Pace /km | Pace /mile | km/h | mph |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:00 | 6:26 | 15.00 | 9.32 |
| 5:00 | 8:03 | 12.00 | 7.46 |
| 6:00 | 9:39 | 10.00 | 6.21 |
| 7:00 | 11:16 | 8.57 | 5.32 |
Reading paces on different devices
- Most sports watches let you choose min/km or min/mile for pace, and km/h or mph for speed. Pick the one that matches the race markers so you can compare without doing sums.
- Treadmills usually show speed only. Convert your target pace to km/h or mph here, then set the belt.
- Track coaches quote 400 m lap times. Multiply a lap time by 2.5 for the pace per km, or use the lap field above.
- Cyclists and walkers often prefer speed, while runners prefer pace. The two are the same information, one being the reciprocal of the other.
Pace and conditions
A converter only changes units. Running in heat, humidity, wind, hills or altitude slows the same effort, so a pace that is easy in cool weather can be hard in a hot race. Adjust your goal pace on the day rather than chasing a number. To plan a race, use the pace calculator for finish times and splits, the marathon pace chart for a printable plan, or the treadmill pace calculator for belt settings. For other speed units see the speed converter.
Pace Converter FAQ
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the pace per km by 1.609344. A 5:00 per km pace is 300 × 1.609344 = 483 seconds, or 8:03 per mile. To convert back, divide by 1.609344.
How do I convert km/h to pace?
Divide 3,600 by the speed to get seconds per km. At 10 km/h that is 360 seconds, or 6:00 per km.
What is 6 mph in min/mile?
10:00 per mile, because 60 ÷ 6 = 10 minutes. It is also 6:13 per km and 9.66 km/h.
How do I turn a 400 m lap time into pace?
Multiply the lap time by 2.5 to get time per km. A 90-second lap is 225 seconds per km, or 3:45 per km.
Why is a plain number rejected as a pace?
Paces are minutes and seconds, so 5.5 could mean 5.5 minutes or 5:50. Type 5:30 to be exact.
Does the converter adjust for heat?
No. It converts units only. Hot, humid or hilly conditions slow real running, so adjust your target separately.
