A name numerology calculator with Chaldean and Pythagorean side by side
This free name numerology calculator turns the letters of a name into the three classic name numbers — expression (also called destiny), soul urge and personality — in both the Pythagorean and the Chaldean systems at once. Most sites pick one chart and hide the arithmetic; here every letter shows its value in both, so you can see exactly where each number comes from and why the two systems often disagree.
Add a date of birth and the page also shows the Western life path number and the Indian mulank and bhagyank, and says whether your Chaldean name number matches them — the comparison Indian name-numerology books make when suggesting spellings. Switch to Business name for a company, shop or brand name. Numerology is a cultural tradition, so treat the result as entertainment: it is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice.
How to use the Name Numerology Calculator
- Choose Person or Business name.
- Type the name in English or Devanagari letters (a Devanagari name is written in simple Latin letters first, and the spelling used is shown). For a person, use the name you go by or the full birth-certificate name — numerologists disagree on which, so try both.
- Optionally enter the Date of birth to see the life path, mulank (मूलांक) and bhagyank (भाग्यांक).
- Pick how the Letter Y is treated if your name contains one.
- Read the two headline numbers, the three-row table and the letter tiles, then use Copy result to keep them.
Name Numerology Calculator features
Both systems at once
Pythagorean and Chaldean values for every letter, with the full reduction shown, not just the final digit.
Master and karmic numbers
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept in the Pythagorean result; totals that pass through 13, 14, 16 or 19 are flagged as karmic debt numbers.
A stated Y rule
Y counts as a vowel unless A, E, I, O or U stands beside it — or force it either way.
Business names
A separate mode for brand and company names, with digits and symbols listed as not counted.
Birth numbers alongside
Life path, mulank and bhagyank from the same date, so the name can be compared with them.
The two letter charts
The Pythagorean chart simply numbers the alphabet 1 to 9 and starts again: A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on to I and R, which are 9. The Chaldean chart, popularised in English by Cheiro’s Book of Numbers (1926), assigns values by sound and never uses 9, which it treats as sacred. Authors reproduce the Chaldean chart with small differences; this page uses the version found in most published Chaldean calculators.
| Value | Pythagorean letters | Chaldean letters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A J S | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K T | B K R |
| 3 | C L U | C G L S |
| 4 | D M V | D M T |
| 5 | E N W | E H N X |
| 6 | F O X | U V W |
| 7 | G P Y | O Z |
| 8 | H Q Z | F P |
| 9 | I R | — (not used) |
How the numbers are reduced — a worked example
Take John Smith. In the Pythagorean chart JOHN is 1 + 6 + 8 + 5 = 20, which reduces to 2, and SMITH is 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 24, which reduces to 6. Adding the parts gives 8, the expression number. The vowels O and I give the soul urge (6 + 9 → 6) and the consonants give the personality number: 14 → 5 for JOHN and 15 → 6 for SMITH, 5 + 6 = 11. Because 11 is a master number it is not reduced further.
The Chaldean method adds the whole name instead: JOHN is 1 + 7 + 5 + 5 = 18 and SMITH 3 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 5 = 17, so the name number is the compound 35, which reduces to 8. Cheiro gave meanings to compound numbers as well, so the compound is shown next to the single digit. Some Western books also add all letters first instead of reducing each part; when that order gives a different answer the page tells you.
Vowels and the letter Y
A, E, I, O and U are always vowels and W is always a consonant. Y is the hard case: the usual teaching is that Y is a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in its syllable (Lynn, Mary, Yvonne) and a consonant when another vowel carries the sound (Yolanda, Maya). A computer cannot hear the name, so this page uses a spelling rule that gives the same answer for most names — Y is a vowel unless A, E, I, O or U stands right next to it — and it says so whenever a Y appears. Names such as Bryan, where Y sounds like a vowel next to A, are where the two rules differ; use the setting to override it.
Name Numerology Calculator FAQ
Which is more accurate, Chaldean or Pythagorean numerology?
Neither can be tested as accurate — they are two traditions with different letter charts. Pythagorean is the usual Western system; Chaldean is popular in India and with Cheiro’s followers. This name numerology calculator shows both so you can compare.
Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?
Western books usually take the full birth-certificate name for the core numbers and the everyday name for a “current name” reading. Indian practice usually works with the name you sign. Try both.
Can I calculate name numerology by date of birth?
A name number comes from letters only, but the date of birth gives the life path, mulank and bhagyank. Enter both and the page compares them.
Does it work for Hindi names?
Yes. The charts cover A–Z only, so a name typed in Devanagari is written in simple Latin letters first (राम → Ram, दीपिका → Dipika) and the page shows the spelling it used. Spellings differ — Deepika gives other numbers than Dipika — so type the spelling in your documents to check it.
What are master and karmic debt numbers?
Master numbers (11, 22, 33) are left unreduced in Western numerology. Karmic debt numbers (13, 14, 16, 19) are totals that books say carry a lesson. Both are flagged in the table.
How do I check a business name?
Choose Business name. Most Indian practitioners use the Chaldean number for brands; digits and symbols in the name are not counted here.
