False ceiling calculator for gypsum and drop ceilings
This false ceiling calculator lists the materials for a gypsum board ceiling on GI channels or a suspended grid (drop) ceiling. Enter the room length and width and it returns the boards or tiles, the channels or tees, the hangers and screws, and the running feet of framing that estimators and contractors quote.
Choose Gypsum board for the usual false ceiling in Indian homes and offices (perimeter channel, main channels and ceiling sections), or Grid / drop ceiling for the 600 × 600 mm (2 × 2 ft) tile ceilings common in the UK, US and in commercial buildings. Both modes work in metres or feet and for several identical rooms.
Everything is computed in your browser. The layouts are typical, not a manufacturer's specification, so every spacing can be changed to match the system you will install.
How to use the False Ceiling Calculator
- Choose gypsum board or grid ceiling, and metres or feet.
- Enter the room length and width, the number of identical rooms and a waste allowance.
- For gypsum, choose the board size and check the channel, section and hanger spacing; for a grid ceiling choose the tile size and the hanger and tee lengths.
- Read the table of boards or tiles, channels or tees, hangers, wall angle and running length.
- Copy the list for your supplier or contractor.
False Ceiling Calculator features
Two ceiling systems
Gypsum on GI channels, or a suspended grid with tees, wall angle and wire hangers.
Running feet
Total framing length in metres and feet for the quantity surveyors who price by running foot.
Editable spacings
Main channel, section, hanger and screw spacings are inputs, not fixed numbers.
Tile and board sizes
600 × 600, 600 × 1200, 2 × 2 and 2 × 4 ft tiles; 1200 × 2400, 1200 × 3000 mm and 4 × 12 ft boards.
Several rooms
Multiply identical rooms in one list.
How the quantities are worked out
Boards or tiles = ceiling area × (1 + waste) ÷ the area of one board or tile, rounded up. A 6 × 4 m room is 24 m². With 10% waste and 1200 × 2400 mm boards (2.88 m²) that is 9.17, so 10 boards.
For gypsum framing the calculator uses the layout seen in public Indian tender documents (read 19 October 2026): main channels at about 1200 mm centres, ceiling sections across them at 450 mm, soffit hangers at about 1200 mm, a perimeter channel on the walls, and board screws at about 230 mm along the sections. In the 6 × 4 m room that is 4 main-channel lines of 6 m, 14 section lines of 4 m, 20 hangers and 100 m (328 ft) of channel in total.
For a grid ceiling, main tees run at 1200 mm (4 ft) centres and are hung on wire at 1200 mm; 1200 mm cross tees sit at the tile module, with 600 mm tees between them for 600 × 600 tiles, and wall angle runs round the edge. That is the 4 ft / 2 ft pattern used with ASTM C636 installations (Rockfon and Bellevue guidance, read 19 October 2026).
Typical spacings
| Part | Typical spacing | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Gypsum main channel | 1200 mm | Hung from the slab on hangers or cleats |
| Ceiling section | 450 mm | Screwed across the main channels; 400 mm is used for heavier boards |
| Board screws | about 230 mm | On the sections, closer at board edges |
| Grid main tee and hanger wire | 1200 mm (4 ft) | 12-gauge wire minimum at this spacing |
Limits and tips
- Follow the framing manufacturer's load tables and spacing for heavy boards, lights and fans; extra hangers or supports may be needed.
- Seismic zones, fire-rated ceilings and plenum spaces have extra bracing rules that this list does not cover.
- Cove lighting, bulkheads, drops and curved ceilings add boards and channel; include them as extra area or extra rooms.
- The cost of boards, joint finishing and paint is separate: see the drywall calculator for tape and compound, the paint calculator, and the insulation calculator for the void above.
False Ceiling Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate a false ceiling?
Multiply room length by width for the area, divide by the board area after adding waste, and count channels from the spacings: mains at 1200 mm, sections at 450 mm, hangers at 1200 mm. The calculator does these steps.
What is running feet in false ceiling work?
Running feet is the total length of channel or edge profile, measured along its length. Contractors often price the framing by running foot. The calculator shows channel and grid length in both metres and feet.
How many tiles do I need for a drop ceiling?
Divide the room area by the tile area and add waste. A 6 × 4 m room needs 67 tiles of 600 × 600 mm before waste, about 74 with 10%.
How many gypsum boards for a 10 × 12 ft room?
The ceiling is 120 ft². One 4 × 8 ft board covers 32 ft², so 120 × 1.1 ÷ 32 = 4.1, which rounds up to 5 boards.
What is the spacing of channels in a gypsum false ceiling?
Typically 1200 mm for the main channels and 450 mm for the ceiling sections, with hangers at about 1200 mm. Follow your board maker's system sheet because it can differ.
Does it work for a suspended ceiling in the UK?
Yes. Choose the grid ceiling, pick 600 × 600 or 600 × 1200 mm tiles, and use metres. The main tee, cross tee and wall angle counts follow the usual 1200 mm module.
