Sweep sizing is a rule of thumb: makers publish slightly different room-size bands, and the numbers here sit in the middle of them. Check the fan’s own air delivery (CMM) and BEE star label as well as its size.

Ceiling fan size calculator: 900, 1200 or 1400 mm?

This ceiling fan size calculator matches your room to a fan sweep: the blade-tip-to-blade-tip diameter in millimetres and inches. Enter the room length, width and ceiling height, choose the Indian market guide or the US ENERGY STAR table, and you get the recommended sweep, how many fans the room needs, the downrod length for your ceiling and the height at which the blades will hang.

The question people ask most in India is whether to buy a 1200 mm or a 1400 mm fan. A fan that is too small cannot move air to the corners of the room; one that is too large looks cramped and may sit too close to the walls. The calculator also handles long narrow rooms, tall ceilings and hot, humid spaces where a stronger breeze is wanted.

How to use the Ceiling Fan Size Calculator

  1. Choose feet or metres and enter the room length, width and ceiling height.
  2. Pick the Indian market rule of thumb (sizes in mm) or the ENERGY STAR table (sizes in inches).
  3. Tick the box if the room is hot and humid, or if you want a stronger breeze, to go up one size.
  4. Read the sweep size, the number of fans, the downrod and the blade height, and any notes about steps up or down.
  5. Copy or share the summary to take to the shop.

Ceiling Fan Size Calculator features

Two guides

Indian sizes (600, 900, 1200, 1400 mm) or the ENERGY STAR bands converted to the nearest size sold.

Several fans

Rooms above 260 ft² (24 m²) or long, narrow rooms over 120 ft² get a fan per zone.

Ceiling aware

Downrod length for blades near 2.5 m, a warning for low ceilings and a size step-up for very tall rooms.

Wall clearance

Steps the size down if the blades would come closer than about 46 cm (18 in) to the walls.

The size bands used

The ENERGY STAR column is from the ENERGY STAR ceiling fan basics page (read 30 October 2026), which cites a 2003 American Lighting Association table. I found no official BEE chart that maps room area to sweep. The Indian column is my summary of manufacturer guides, which disagree by about 20 ft² at each step; one puts 1200 mm at 100–150 ft², another at 65–100 ft². Treat the edges as soft.

How the result is worked out

  1. Area per fan. One fan per 260 ft² (Indian guide) or 400 ft² (ENERGY STAR); a room longer than 1.8 times its width and over 120 ft² gets two fans.
  2. Band lookup. The area per fan picks the sweep from the table above.
  3. Adjustments. A hot, humid room or a ceiling above 3.2 m steps up one size; blades closer than 46 cm to a wall step it down. The wall figure follows ENERGY STAR’s advice to mount fans in the middle of the room, 18 inches from the walls.
  4. Mounting. ENERGY STAR advises blades at least 7 ft (2.13 m) above the floor, and 8 to 9 ft where the ceiling allows. The downrod is the ceiling height minus 0.25 m for motor and canopy minus 2.5 m, rounded to 6 inch rod lengths. The 0.25 m is an assumption; check your fan’s own dimensions.

Buying tips

  • Sweep is not the only thing that matters. Compare air delivery in cubic metres per minute and the BEE star rating; a higher star rating means less electricity for the same air.
  • For a bedroom of 100–150 ft², 1200 mm is the common default in India.
  • Hang the fan in the middle of the room. For an L-shaped or very long room, two smaller fans spread air better than one big one.
  • Sizes sold vary by brand (1050, 1200 and 1400 mm are common). Choose the nearest.

Ceiling Fan Size Calculator FAQ

Which fan size is best for a 12 x 10 ft room?

A 1200 mm (48 inch) fan. The room is 120 ft², which falls in the 1200 mm band. Tick the hot-room box if you want a 1400 mm fan for a stronger breeze.

Is a 1400 mm fan too big for a bedroom?

For a bedroom under about 160 ft² (15 m²) it usually is: the blades come too close to the walls and the airflow can feel strong. 1200 mm suits most bedrooms.

What fan size for a 10 x 10 ft room?

100 ft² falls in the 1200 mm band on the Indian guide, and in the 36–42 inch band on the ENERGY STAR table, so a 1050 or 1200 mm fan.

How many fans does a large hall need?

One fan per 260 ft² or less, placed centrally in each zone. A 20 x 15 ft hall of 300 ft² gets two 1200 mm fans.

What is the standard ceiling fan size in India?

1200 mm (48 in) is the most common. 900 mm suits small rooms and kitchens, 1400 mm suits large halls. 600 mm is for very small spaces.

Do I need a downrod?

Only if your ceiling is above about 2.75 m (9 ft). Without a rod, fans in a tall room hang too high to move the air at body level.
