Zodiac constellations dates: where the Sun really is
This tool shows which of the zodiac constellations the Sun is actually in front of on any date, the 12 familiar ones plus Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer. It uses the official constellation boundaries of the International Astronomical Union. Pick a date, such as today or a birthday, and it names the constellation and the tropical sign side by side. It also gives the exact moments the Sun enters and leaves that constellation, and a table of all 13 for the year.
This is astronomy, not astrology. It says where the Sun stands against the stars and makes no claims about personality or the future. To look up a traditional sun sign, use the zodiac sign calculator. The two answers often differ, and the sections below explain why.
How to use the Zodiac Constellation Finder
- Choose a Date and, if it matters, a Time. The Sun crosses a boundary at a particular moment, so near a changeover the hour decides the answer.
- Pick My zone, IST or UTC, or any city zone from the Time zone list.
- Read the constellation and the sign. The list below them gives the Sun’s ecliptic longitude, when it entered the constellation and when it moves on.
- Look at the wheel: the outer ring holds the 13 constellations, the inner ring the 12 signs, and the yellow marker shows the Sun.
- Use the table for every constellation’s dates that year, and copy the result or download the year as a CSV file.
Zodiac Constellation Finder features
Official IAU boundaries
The 1930 boundaries drawn by Eugène Delporte for the IAU, in Nancy Roman’s 1987 lookup table. The tool reproduces all eight of her worked examples.
Computed, not copied
The Sun’s position is calculated for the exact moment and precessed to the boundaries’ 1875 frame, so dates shift correctly over the centuries instead of repeating a fixed list.
13 constellations
Ophiuchus is included, with the Sun in it for about 18 days from late November.
Sign comparison
Each constellation is listed beside the tropical sign of the same name, with the gap in days.
Any date 1583–2999
Useful for birthdays, historical dates and future events, in any time zone.
The zodiac constellations in order, with 2026 dates
Dates are when the Sun enters each constellation, calculated by this tool in Indian Standard Time. They move by about one day every 70 years, and by a day either way with the time zone.

|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 19 Apr | 25.5 | Aries 20 Mar |
| Taurus | 14 May | 38.3 | Taurus 20 Apr |
| Gemini | 22 Jun | 29.2 | Gemini 21 May |
| Cancer | 21 Jul | 21.0 | Cancer 21 Jun |
| Leo | 11 Aug | 37.0 | Leo 23 Jul |
| Virgo | 17 Sep | 44.5 | Virgo 23 Aug |
| Libra | 31 Oct | 23.1 | Libra 23 Sep |
| Scorpius | 23 Nov | 6.5 | Scorpio 23 Oct |
| Ophiuchus | 30 Nov | 18.3 | — (no sign) |
| Sagittarius | 18 Dec | 32.8 | Sagittarius 22 Nov |
| Capricornus | 20 Jan | 27.4 | Capricorn 22 Dec |
| Aquarius | 16 Feb | 24.1 | Aquarius 20 Jan |
| Pisces | 12 Mar | 37.5 | Pisces 18 Feb |
Why the constellation and the sign differ
The 12 tropical signs are equal 30° slices of the ecliptic, counted from the point where the Sun stands at the March equinox. About 2,000 years ago that point lay in the constellation Aries, so the signs and the constellations roughly matched. Earth’s axis slowly wobbles (precession, one turn in about 25,800 years), and the equinox point has drifted about 30° west, into Pisces. As a result, the Sun now enters most constellations about a month after the sign with the same name begins.
Constellations are also not equal in size. In 1930 the IAU fixed the boundaries as lines of right ascension and declination for the year 1875, drawn around the traditional star figures. Along the Sun’s path Virgo takes 44 days and Scorpius only 7, and the boundaries cross a corner of Ophiuchus. Sidereal astrology, used in Indian Vedic charts, ties its signs to the stars but still uses 12 equal signs, so its dates fall closer to these but are not the same.
How the dates are calculated
For each moment the tool computes the Sun’s apparent position with the VSOP87 planetary theory and removes nutation. It then rotates the position back to the 1875 equator and equinox with the IAU precession formulas (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 21) and finds the constellation in Roman’s table (CDS catalogue VI/42). A day-by-day scan and repeated halving find each boundary crossing to well under a minute, and the boundary longitude in the table is the Sun’s longitude at that instant. The result has been checked against the 1977 IAU-boundary dates and against the 2019 Ophiuchus passage reported by EarthSky. The equinox and solstice dates tool uses the same model of the Sun.
Zodiac Constellation Finder FAQ
What are the 13 zodiac constellations?
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius and Pisces, in the order the Sun passes through them.
When is the Sun in Ophiuchus?
From about 29–30 November to 17–18 December each year. In 2026 it enters at 05:37 UTC on 30 November and leaves for Sagittarius on 18 December.
Does this change my zodiac sign?
No. This page describes the sky. Western astrology defines signs by the seasons, not by the constellations, so your tropical sign stays the same. This tool simply shows that the Sun was in front of a different star pattern.
Can I see the zodiac constellations in the sky?
Not the one the Sun is in, because it is up in daylight. The constellations opposite the Sun are high around midnight. Use the star chart to find them tonight.
Why does the tool ask for a time?
The Sun crosses a boundary at an exact moment. On the day of a changeover the answer depends on the hour and your time zone.
